I had no idea they segregated cabs by quality between departure and arrival level. Learn something new every day....
At the arrivals level, you take the next taxi in the queue. Some of the older taxis go to the airport because then they are assured of a fare. If they cruise the streets, many people will not use them because they do not like to get into an old, beat up taxi. Up at departures, the taxis that are dropping people off seem to generally be newer, plus you don't have to get into an old taxi there, as you are the one who chooses which taxi to take.

I see you get some great advice from other members, so I will not get into the taxi thread, but I cannot write this in more bold letters: Do get in touch with with the BKTF members in town! (post your schedule and some words in the member section). It made a huge difference on my first solo trip to Bangkok in 2004.

Daffy...not segregated.....but as CG says...old beat up taxis are guaranteed a fair, often a decent one, I can say with certainty, I have never seen a new Toyota Limo taxi in the queue downstairs EVER, (admittedly I now go there less, but I regularly meet people and watch the queue whilst waiting). Also all the older smaller taxis, combined with their LPG cylinders have next to zero boot (trunk) space. When you travel as heavily as I do (I once left Thailand with 160kg by plane) I need boot space. Same on arrival. I'm trying to get friendly with one of these large ISUZU taxi drivers, so as to have a regular fare in one of those, however I'm yet to hail one. I keep the numbers of 3 or 4 taxi drivers, chosen mainly on the taxi itself......

160 KG,,, how much EXCESS weight did you pay on air-fare???, Being the "user pays" thinking person I believe air-fares should be weighed along with the person, i.e TOTAL weight ???? I cannot see it being fair that a 50 KG Thai women with a 35 KG bag pays more than a Farang women of 130 KG with a 25 kilo bag.

If you left Thailand by plane with 160 kg of baggage and did not pay extra, then I assume it was not recorded in the computer and the pilot did not have accurate info as to whether they were overweight at takeoff. Let me know which airline that was so I can avoid flying that one. Or maybe this is just a bs claim.
