lrw301jl, I stayed at the Grand President in April 2003 and Majestic Suites June 2003. At the President, my friend paid 2000 Bht a night for a one bedroom suite, which included a frig. and micro wave. The bedroom had a king size bed and an adjacent sitting room, tv's in both rooms. President charges 10% service charge and tax. The rooms are very clean, with in-room safe, and the staff is good. The price did not include breakfast. I stayed with another friend in a 2 bedroom suite. Our rooms were in tower 2 and on the second floor. I think because of where my room was situated, I could hear the birds chirping in the morning. I should say, crowing, these must've been big birds. Also the room had mosquitos, probably because of being so low to the ground. The hotel has a aviary towards the back of the hotel. I would recommend a higher room and away from the Sukhumvit facing end. I also didn't care for the walk out to Sukhumvit road. It's not a far walk, maybe 75 yards, but the sidewalk is crappy (as is mostly in BKK) and it stinks, must be the sewers. I wouldn't hesitate staying there again, but I'd have to get a better rate, because other nice hotels in the area charge less. I went back to BKK in less than 2 months, because I had to make sure I wasn't dreaming about this place. Liar, I was just horny. So in June, I went back alone and stayed at the Majestic suites. I didn't have any hotel reservations and just walked in upon arriving. I had emailed the hotel to ask how availability was and they said wasn't a problem for my arrival. Upon arriving I was offered the internet rate of 1200 Bht per night, including svc charge and taxes. As some of the other members pointed out, the room facing Sukhumvit road is very small. There's absolutely no way 2 people can walk side by side in the room together. But the room served its purpose and the price was right. Very clean and the staff was great. Here's my only problem with the Majestic. The in-room safe is locked by a magnetic key, not the code type. So you have to hide the key when going to sleep with your GF. I was concerned about this because I am a heavy sleeper and if I had brought back an evil GF who wanted to rip me off. All she had to do was find this key and clean me out. Obviously this never happened and everthing went okay. I brought 3 girls back on different occasions and none turned out on the bad side. Otherwise Majestic is located in a superb location. Step out the door, turn the corner and you're at Nana Plaza. If cost is a factor, you might want to try City Lodge on Soi 9. I have never stayed there, but when I was there in June, the hotel was advertising 2000 Bht for 3 nights. Do a search on City Lodge Soi 9 and you can read up on members posts. Check out some of the other posts, some really good info out there, like where to eat and money matters... Have fun and enjoy!

Usually use atm card - if you go this route, you might want to up the amount per withdrawal limit while you're home to minimize the bank fees (non-member bank atm fee for me is $3USD). Plus, once you hit this limit, you have to wait 24+ hours before can withdraw again; that can be awkward. ATM's all over the place - I always look for Cirus sign as know that will connect with my home bank. For traveller's checks, get $500 amex. Get a better rate with traveller's checks than cash; there is a 50 cent USD per check, so go with the larger denomination to minimize cost. I carry minimal cash; as posted, couple of 20's for when I arrive back home. If you pay your hotel with credit card, hotel will often tack on the percentage they pay the credit card company even though they are not supposed to do so (think with amex, it's 3%); but, for me, convience of being able to pay with credit card worthwhile. Only carry enough cash for your fun; ST/LT "entertainment" will be paid at your hotel AFTER the deed. Be aware of pickpockets, especially the katoys on Sukhumvit. Enjoy, but be warned, there is never a "one and only" trip to LOS.

Hey everyone, Thanks for everyone's advice and wisdom, although I got rather mix of answers. But it really helped and I really appreciated. I thought couple more questions, if you guys wouldn't mind answering. What is cheapest way to call back to USA although I won't be making too many phone call back home, but at least I got to let everyone back home that I got here safely. Should I get phone card here in USA. To call from Thailand back to USA. I saw couple those that cost around 20 to 25 USD. How does everyone feel about that? What is the international code for USA. I know some these might be stupid questions. This is my plan for the six days that I going to be there. I am definetly hitting these spots ; Eden, Darlings, Plaza E, Dollhouse, Longgun, G-Spot, Poiseden, Mirage, Emmaneulle, Midnite Bar, and Nataree. What do you guys think about my choices, I know will make it to other places definetly. Let me know about my choices. Does anyone know of any good tailors where I could get good suites. I don't want to get riped off. I know you get what you paid for and that it will never be this cheap back with the quality I am going to get. I prefer the place is kind close where I stay at. (Majestic Suites) Skytrain userfriendly? Thanks, LRw301jl

Quote: from lrw301jl on 5:18 pm on July 3, Skytrain userfriendly? Thanks, LRw301jl
skytrain very user friendly - have maps at stations. It's pay by distance (min 10 baht), or you can get a 100 baht 1 day pass, or a 280 baht "3 nights and 4 days pass". Automated machines for "distance ticket", only take 5 and 10 baht coins. If need change, have a window for that. Does NOT run all night (6am to midnight). For Patpong, get on Sukhumvit line train going towards Mo Chit, switch at Siam, take Silom line train towards Saphan Taksin, getting off at Sala Daeng. For Baron's, take Sukhumvit line train towards On Nut, getting off at Phrom Phong.

In regards to your first question on money, I do a combo of all three. I use my ATM first and foremost. It is easier to deal with just going to an ATM and getting the money. TC's are nice because you can get new ones if your's was stolen or lost. The bad thing is to cash them, they want passport id and you better come very close to signing the TC the way you did originally. They are meticulous when comparing signatures and will reject a signature just slightly off. It made me more nervous signing these things so eventually I went ATM. It sounds stupid, but when you don't have your ATM with you and only a little cash and the rest traveler's cheques it could be a problem. I bring TC's as backup money. As mentioned, in Thailand the TC gets a better exchange than cash. The big tourist cities accept TC's but you might have problems if you go off the beaten path. Cash is also backup money for me if I loose the card or something. You can always cash the cash. A few $100's for emergency purposes should do. Do not exchange all your money at the airport or anywhere. Exchanging costs money. To exchange back into dollars will cost money. Exchange two or three hundred dollars to get you by for a day or two and get a feel for what your spending habits will be. Majestic Suites is very modern inside. The rooms are pretty small compared to others. The more money for the room the bigger it gets. The safe key should be locked and hidden somewhere in your luggage. It's a nice hotel. $1200 for almost a weeks stay. You'll live like a king if you can spend that much in that short of time. I don't think you need to ask all the questions that you have asked. Alot is covered in this forum previously or covered in other forums. The tailor issue will probably be found quite easily with a search in the shopping forum. The MP's, discos, agogo's and everything else have their own sections and are filled with info. Take the time to read the other sections in the forum. It's quite entertaining.

I stayed at Majestic Suites and was very happy with my stay. I had booked a mid level room for a negotiated rate of 1200 baht per night (inc breakfast, taxes, tips, etc). I was wondering why everyone said the rooms were so small. I found out that they had upgraded me to a deluxe room, at no extra charge, when I checked out. Nice place to stay, very good employees and service.
