I have the same approach to begging whether it be in San Fran, Bangkok, or my home city of Dublin - I never give money - Often kids are put on the Street (this is a dublin example) to get money for abusive alcoholic or druggy parents - and as Dr Love mentioned there is an underworld that exploits cripples etc.
What i do is I buy food and give it to them, A buger or sandwich (in Dublin or places like san fran) or noddles from a street vendor in BKK. This way I feel that what i am doing directly benefits the person it is intended for.
The sad fact of the matter is that governments worldwide have shirked their responsibility to care for certain segments of the community - I dont want to get on a soap box here - but to say dont give, because that encourages begging - to me seems to me an excuse to massage your own concience (i know - spelt wrong).

another sad fact is that the facial structure of the kids being nursed, seldom resembles that of the mother ?? / beggar - yes, TPE cynical as ever  - you may have seen a small [ dwarf] size Guy, hunched back, often begs around soi 4 ..... spotted him a few months ago in a white suit, shovelling money over at the 10,000baht window, at the Royal Turf club !!!

Also weekend Mket has it's share.
Mass of kids asking money for school , doctor , selling tissues...You name it.
Only thing I am not sure are those white-robed women who shove their bowls to me:"Ka...ka" and jingling it.
I ignore them too and I thinkthey are NOT members of any sisterhood.
Only one time I have given money was the time when there was a man with a kid standing in the corner of alleys.
He looked like been treated with flamethrower.Yopu cannot fake THAT.

TPE, no not cynical..... Children are traded and rented out. Ever seen that 80 year old woman with a 2 year old child ....
The hunchback is probably not the only example how foreigners and thai alike are cheated.
ITV had two months ago about beggars ,showing 'disabled' beggars packing up their things, tidying up and leaving home by foot.
You gotta love Thaiand ....

actually - the bar girls from NANA and COWBOY and the beggar mafia combine have an intricate kickback system with finely tuned and highly accurate accounting systems. The BGs bring the falang near the beggars and then encourage them to pay, watching carefully the amount and the time stamp so she can check her accounts when she gets paid out at the end of the month from the beggar mafia.
Watch closely next time, be sensitive and aware, and you will see that this is true.
Plus that guy who pulls himself by his lips up and down the entrance to soi 7 pushing his bowl in front of him never seems to be actually going anywhere. -hmmmm...

Exactly!! One time instead of giving a homeless guy money, I got him a bottle of Night Train. Even though I had to listen to his drunken tirade of how much he hates Night Train and prefers Thunderbird, I still felt a warm feeling as he lumbered away and took a swig of the juice.
Seconds later I realized that the warm feeling I had was a result of his pissing on my leg.

I have seen the same in that "Peoples Paradise", China. However, the difference is that instead of encouraging me to give money, my GF is chasing them away.
She tells me they are all criminals and cons.
