Uo2, I have to admit to being a little worried about what to expect prior to going on my first trip. I would advise you to just set your dates and buy a ticket then post your dates on the 'members meeting members' thread and hook up with some fellow members on this board.
Your first trip will be like an adventure and believe me when I say your life will never be thesame again.....

The 50 Baht surcharge is officially because the poor driver has to queue at the airport waiting his turn. He can wait several hours if there are a lot of taxis but no passengers.
Of course if you ask them privately they will tell you they have to pay a "fee" to pick up at the airport.
Departures level pickup is a good idea as they are empty and will be happy to avoid paying the fee. It is however illegal and could get him stopped and fined. Just deny it is your problem and walk away.
Another one is to walk out to the road and hail one. This is dangerous as the traffic is dense and fast moving.
Never ever ever let him pick up a friend for the front seat. There was a pair a few years ago who were robbing and killing passengers. As their numbers are recorded they were not picking up in the airport but outside on the road.
Also dangerous is that most taxis are uninsured. If you have an accident it is your bad karma.
I always try to have a car and driver waiting for me or if I am just going for up to a week I park in the car park in Terminal 1.
VIP parking is at one end and for a very small sum of 40 Baht you can rest assured that a guard whose name you do not know has promised to keep an eye on it whilst you are away.........

Hey, Uos, here's the easy way:
- check when your earliest vacation date is coming up.
- Book a ticket to LOS for the first day past that date.
- Book it for however long you have money
(make sure it's longer than 10 days)
- Let the bros know.
- Enjoy yourself, and prepare for an adventure.
I'll be there in late August.
