On my last arrival there were at least,,,100 persons standing in a line waitin for the taxi ticket,a true meltin' pot!
I've walked all the way over the taxi's queue and signaled with my hand to the first cab available who was coming in (a bit of a walk, smoking time)
And after 12 hours sitted down is not a big prob.
-u have ticket? He ask'd
-i give u 50 baht is ok? (showin it to him) he agreed.
throwed my case in the backseat with me and off we gone.
On the way he do stopped a full 7 minutes to a gas station for take a shit too!Fine, since he helped me before.
the departure area trick was teached to me ages ago by my first bkk girl,on the way up the stairs there's ATM machine if in need, maybe avoidin the queue at the xchange boots down the hallway too,if there's any.
Time in Bangkok is NOT to WASTE.

Could someone please give a good description of where these stairs to go up to the Departure level to grab a taxi are? I've been through arrivals twice and obviously passes the stairs at some point but I just made a B-line for the outside stand so did not take much of the surrounding in. TIA

My way: dead tired arriving - after a long flight - early in the morning. I dont want ANY arguements or hassle whatsoever and are prepared to pay for it - just as I fly business or 1st class to avoid screaming brats half night and sardinecan seats. So always ask hotel (in my case Westin) to pick you up. Wins? A nice friendly driver awaits you as soon as you are outside customs. He takes your luggage and carries it to the nice modern Mercedes - and even though the suitcase is bigger and heavier than him: no moaning!

You place your ass in the comfortable back seat, where a cold or hot towel is presented, morning paper and a soft drink is served. He drives good and careful. All tolls are paid during the trip and he knows where you are going without any arguing or map reading!

You sit comfortably and enjoy the view of the city in the morning and a smile comes to your face: "ah-finally"....!

Once arrived to the hotel, the bellboys unload the luggage, carry it to your room and you tip the driver. No payment - thats added to the bill - and hardly noticed. Compare it with a half hour cab ride in your home town! More expensive than "song taew" - sure. But why not spoil yourself sometimes!

On all other trips in BKK or elsewhere I later use BTS, taxi or tuk-tuk and back to Don Muang is a regular cab. But then I am awake and alert and not so particular!

You forgot to mention the part about running out of the hotel for your first sanuk time victim after putting your bags in the room.

I don't kow exactly how much it meters from Suk to Airport or Airpprt to Suk. I gave 300 Bht on four occassions. Am I paying too much?

If your only paying 300 (including tolls & surcharge), its about right for a day time ride! As said before its 60 Baht worth of tolls plus 50 Baht Airport surcharge plus the Metered fare of between 150-200!

When you come out of customs and enter the arrival hall make a left walk about 60 meters and you will see the escalator right in front of you. Go up two levels get off make a right turn and then another right turn and you are less then 5 meters from the departure hall. Taxi are on the left. I would suggest walk about half way down and then grab a taxi.

I would suggest not using the Manhattan taxi service desk when you leave LOS because they are really expensive!!

I was leaving Bangkok on my first visit and they wanted 600 Baht for the short trip to the Airport.

Just walk down soi 15 to Sukhumvit, cross over and hail a cab on the other side.

In the Bangkok Arrival Terminal you can find elevators to the Departure area by Baggage Storage.

I always use the Departure area to hail a cab, just easier.

From Manhattan I didn't even have to walk down the soi to Suk - their boy with the whistle at the front called one over for me.

141Baht on meter, including 35B startoff. Tolls 60B. Total time of about 20 minutes of white knuckle ride and at least 4 near misses. One of the more terrifying taxi journeys....
