oh RTB,

Have you ever tried fighting with a full pool cue, it's too long which makes it very difficult and slow to manover and so it not a very effective weapon especially in confines of a bar, however if it is broken.

Anyway breaking a pool cue over your knee is no mean feat it sounds like you are a lot stronger than you suggest TC.

Is that why your nick is Broken Leg then?
Did you try to break a cue and the cue broke you?

I guess you embelished the translation. ...... because.... frankly, saying "You've lost all respect for women" does not sound very macho. Though I agree that the best was to avoid confrontation and just leave.

Thanks for all your comments Lads.

Smegs, you're right it certainly wasn't a macho thing to say and it sounds really corny/daft now. I didn't take time to think what to say because the adrenelin was pumping but back in the cot with my GF it was terrific! It seemed like she wanted to show her appreciation and at the same time she was "pumped" as well!

Cheers
PS: I don't advocate fighting but if you've been in a "fight or flee" situation I recommend that you find a floosie to "play" with PDQ!
PPS: I translated it something like, "Khun maimee kwamg grengai!" but that was when she "assaulted" me!

Oh shit! I guess it's not a safe as I thought. I read that Thais consider public displays of anger to be a weakness (in direct contrast to where I work, where it seems like a prerequisite to getting promoted). I thought that was the reason. Sounds like most of the fights occur in the pool halls and places where people hang out to drink. Maybe it's the Go-Go bar system that prevents the fights. Guys just go in to have a few beers, pick a girl (or not), and leave. Can't really hang out and get piss drunk 'cause the music is too loud.

I still feel safer than in the bars where I live.

I've seen a few fights break out amongst Thais... 6 years ago in Route 66 on RCA, saw my first bar fight in Thailand between college kids, I was amazed how it went from a shove to complete madness in literally 3 seconds - bar stools, beer bottles flying. It was like an explosion.

Once in the middle of the day in a taxi, my driver bumped into the back of a motorbike messenger, nobody got hurt, I don't think the vehicles were even damaged but when the cabbie got out to talk to the motorbike guy, I guess they forgot to address each other in the proper respectful terms, and again in a few seconds it became an amateur muay thai bout which looked very silly through the windshield of my taxi. My driver got knocked to the ground, bystanders came between them, and that was it, we got out and took another taxi.

Saw a few fights between farang groups 5-6 years ago when I spent a bit more time in Pattaya.. There seemed to be loosely put together gangs, like French Arabs taking on other farangs or something like that. A few fights in Marine Disco took place but no weapons were used..

Never been in a fight myself (being 200cm/100kg and a pretty peaceful guy probably helps), had a couple of encounters with jerks at Q-Bar, stemming from jealousy about my TGF, but she never lets me take them on... bless her soul.

Only ever had tension with Thai dudes at the beach disco on Koh Samed, where you sometimes have a local gang that seems eager to see if any farang might be stupid enough to get his ass whooped. But even that's a rarity, maybe once in 20 visits has that happened.

So.. it's always a good idea to walk away, all the more so if there are Thais involved. Getting into a fight with a Thai is a very, very bad idea.

In January I was in Soi 7 Beer Garden.

An American guy sitting a couple of bar stools down the bar has just finished demanding that the bartender call the manager because there is no booze in his drink.
Makes a big scene and I think the staff all know he is full of it but they appease him.
So I already suspect he is an xxxhole.

This guy is talking to a bar girl that I knew slightly,
she says to the guy "You from California, Al from California too."
I am less than thrilled but say "Hi, how ya doin' ?".

Anyway, he says "How old are you?" but with this edge in his voice, a wiseass tone.
I figure I can't win talking to this guy.
I said "Why don't you just have fun with your girlfriend
and leave me out of your conversation."
He says "I'll bet you're fifty aren't you?"
I say "Just have your fun and leave me to have mine, OK?"
He says some shit like "Oh, did I hurt your feelings? Are you pissed off now?"
I ignore him and he doesn't stop.
Sorry, no John Wayne ending...
So I pick up my drink and walk to the other end of the bar.
A few minutes later the bar girl stands up and slaps this guy and yells some shit at him and walks away.

It wasn't a fight but this dickhead wanted one.
Never had anybody (Thai or farang) give me a problem in Thailand before.

Interesting thread.

I've never seen a fight in Thailand or elsewhere, nor have I ever been involved in one.

This thread reinforces my view that there are those who seem to be a magnet for trouble wherever they go, and those that don't.

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to find yourself in a threatening situation once is unfortunate... to have it happen 2-3 times in quick succession sounds like carelessness.

If people find themselves in fights or being threatened with physical violance regularly, perhaps they should take a step back and consider that the only common factor in all those apparently random occurances is, in fact, themselves.

Yin and Yang are not bar girls' names, you know

An American bar owner once told me that when he 86ed guys for starting fights they always said
"I was so drunk, I didn't know what I was doing."
He said he could almost always answer:
"You knew enough to pick a fight with the smallest guy in the bar."

I'm startin fights all over the gaff when I come..

maybe the April RT is a good place to start!!

Mmmmm.. lemme see Who's first?????????

No all joking aside, I've seen fights in Khon Khaen and in Pattaya, all ending quite horribly with blood and knives etc.

The only time I have been "started on" was by a falang in Pattaya. I was at my local bar, and this fella walks in (big english yobbo type). He is well oiled and maybe looking for agro.. anyways.. I was introduced to him by bar manager and ask him how long he's been here (small talk).. He starts laughing and acting all superior and giving everyone the eyes like "who is this wanker".
Anyway, Whatever, I cut the convo short and go back to doing what I'm doing. Whith that I look over in his direction, actually looking past him at some nice talent walking down the soi. He stand up, shouts at me "What the f*** u looking at..." and was about to say more.....
I cut him off, focused my eyes on him and shout back "not f***in much, why???" he sat back down with a scowl on his face. All the lads at the bar told him I was cool and a regular there while in town. He seemed to chill out then.

Saw him a few days later at a different place and he was all chatty with me!!

Stange that!!!!!!

I hate fightin... to old and to battered from previous life!!
