Blattsucker, TPE your descriptions are good from what I've seen........They keep the places as clean as dilapidation allows. Sometimes they're a bit lucky and get a into newer building. Most of the crappy English teachers in Bkk live in the same sort of digs (slackers).
Yes, due to village mentality their sense of community is high. Of course this also means that compared with Westerners, their sense of privacy or need of privacy is low. Thais (not only Isan) like people around, noise, bright random decorations, etc. The TV is on 24/7. Otherwise it must be paranoia for them--what are they going to do, sit down and write a poem in the silence of contemplation? No, they hate silence (equals insane boredom).
But compared to many of them's homes upcountry these meager rooms are pretty luxurious and ofter lots of privacy! Almost too much. In general I've found the older the girl is the more likely she may be to live alone. Not economical reason, just that she may appreciate her own mind a bit more. Doesn't mean she won't sleep and/or watch TV 24/ 7 as well though. But there's plenty of young chicks with their own rooms too (however much time they spend in them awake) ----if the money's coming in they can show a little face to their cronies. As well as be the two week GFE for a tourist. I used to see that a lot.

I've been to one tgs place. It was in a building that was a spa during normal hours. It had a combined bathroom, shower, and toilet. Small fridge, one large bed, airconditioned, and tv. She paid 3,500 baht per month. Generally clean except for a roach problem. She lived by herself and was in her early 20s. It was in the business district. The only thing I didn't like about it was she did the I'm feeling sick routine in the morning and asked for more than we agreed.
