some beer bars are "offically" restaurants. The licence is different so are opening hours.
"Offically" if there are doors and the area is enclosed there is then "Offically" no smoking allowed with a fine of, if I remember correctly, 2000 Baht for the offender and larger fine for the owner for permitting it.
If there are no doors then smoking is "offically" allowed.

In case DrL hinted at that imho for the topic at hand most of the bars on Sukhumvit soi 7/1 being partially in open air partially in a building are however "beer bars". Moreover OP explictedly stated his question to be on "open air (beer) bars" hence in his view there exist different types of beer bars.
Nice touch SBob; however imho semantically a dive can be in open air and/or in a building with doors; a dive being a "disreputable bar or club: a dirty, shabby, or disreputable bar or club (informal) " Microsoft® Encarta® Reference Library 2005. In case a "bar or club" with a reputation for having prostitutes on the menu is considered "disreputable" then in LOS beyond beer bars open air and/or shophouse, short time bars, blowjob bars, poolbars, gentlemen's clubs, KTVs, gogos, one might argue a soapie where drinks/food and in some cases also some form of stage entertainment are provided can without doubt be called a "club" hence "a dive" when also prostitutes are on offer. Hence one might reasonably state:
- Pattaya is a mega-dive
- Ratchada between soi 7 and soi 17 is a dive area
-Eden Club on Suk soi 7/1 is a dive not a beer bar but a dozen or so of its neigbours are both

Can we agree that a "beer bar" is a Pattaya style grass hut? A beer bar has no walls & no doors.
The old Bus Stop would qualify. M2N (1) Big Dogs & that place in front of Nana Hotel.

If memory still serves the "OLD"  bus stop did actually have two walls!!!!!

This once more seems to confirm that the construction type of the premises does not seem to be a sufficiently determining criterium for claiming exclusivity on the generic name 'bar beer' the LOS alias for 'beer bar'.
The generic name 'bar beer' has everything to do with the 'modus operandi' no matter whether the premises do have walls doors windows pool tables etc or none or some of just said hardware.
I take it we are in agreement on the required 'modus operandi' of a 'beer bar': sell alcohol at least beer, have bargirls supposed to attract customers, by and large not providing any stage entertainment, sell lady drinks with a commission for the BG, punter has to pay barfine to take BG out during opening hours, punter is expected to negotiate with and renumerate BG for time spent outside and/or sexual services provided.
Esquires Dotcom and DrLove with all respect: in case not in agreement with above, I repeat my question: what is in your view the most commomly used generic name for venues applying said 'modus operandi' in all premises OTHER than "grasshut style" (i take it meaning "no doors no windows" ) ?

a Suksoi33 BG does not work in a "beer bar" but in a "DrLove bar" or "pluche bar beer" 555 ?
soi 7/1 waterholes not "beer bars" but "Dr_No_Love bars" or "same same but different beer bars" 555 ?
