Other was this woman circling in bars and pleading "10 baht for good food".
She was promptly kicked out every time BG's saw her with comment "f_cking fake".
They said me that she had a living outside Pattaya and a husband.
If that was true.

For the cripples, don't know. Bangkok Post does run a charity to support young kids, good students, trying to stay in school, you can see ads in the paper, and the return address is the Post. It is only for kids in the BKK area right now.
I have to harden my heart, but I never give to the women with kids; feel it just rewards bad behavior (making the kids as destitute as possible). Don't necessarily buy the "kickback" to BG mafia scheme; I think Thais give as that's the buddhist way - they give and gain merit. As one girl I know said, "I good luck, have 2 arms, 2 legs; can work." I've never been steered towards a begger or asked to give by any thai I've been with. Sometimes I do give some coins, then ask myself if I'm doing right or not, but even if it goes to a big boss, then maybe the unfortunate gets something. Does kind of make me angry at the people back home in the US when they gripe about having a hard life.

Yes, there are people who control the "begging industry". There are people who control who gets to sell fruit or clothes on the sidewalk too -- or do virtually any other kind of moneymaking venture. That's just the way it is.

Oops, sorry, must have had my serious reading glasses on. Don't doubt that the beggars are controlled by a mafia; like MrJoe says, everything there is controlled by someone higher up with more power.
Have to go back and finish mopping my floors; who says an 11bravo mos doesn't provide any skills for civilian life.

Interestingly enough, about a month ago I encountered a beggar when I was walking past the Parlament Building in Singapore - He was a Farang.
I guess they are everywhere in all shapes and colors...

Yeah, I have seen them there. But this guy in Singapore is the first beggar I have encountered in 18 months of living there. Most of the poor sell trinkets, snacks, etc. to make some change.

So were the people in "Freaks" and also, as far as I can tell, in the other 2 flicks I mentioned. But definitely the case in "Freaks". The people were actual sideshow workers from the different carnival circuits of the day.
And the cool thing about the movie is that instead of casting them as monster, as many people may think, it's the "normal" folk who are cast as the baddies who get their just desserts in the end.
