Perhaps I should amend my theory a bit:
There are some people who naturally attract trouble and others who don't. The former are usually the same people who seem to enjoy describing the trouble that they attract.
I wonder if the two are connected somehow?

You can generalise all you want but in my opinion there is a good chance that a Brit will be involved in a lot of the scuffles that occur in Thailand between Farangs.
I am British and I recognise traits in a lot of other Brits, particularly in Pattaya, that can lead to aggressive behaviour. There is a definite increase in the number of 'yobs' coming to Thailand..it reminds me of Spain twenty years ago.
The British are an aggressive bunch and still culturally backward when compared to our euro friends.
I am proud to be British but it does embarrass me when I see some of our guys behaviour when out & about...we just seem to have more yobs than most other countries.

Ever watch the American reality TV show called "COPS"?
There is one thread that runs throughout. Booze & the excessive consumption thereof.
BH - Thailand is a very safe place, much safer than my home counrty of USA. Provided that you a) keep your wits about you b) don't get too drunk & c) don't venture outside lighted areas at night you will be fine.
Thailand practice about as pure a form of capitalism as anywhere on Earth. Anyone starting a fight in a bar is depriving the bar owner of making money & that person will be dealt with - swiftly & severely. Double that if you are a falang.
So party on - f*** as much as you can - if you see or smell trouble - turn around & walk the other way. You are here to have fun - & that doesn't include giving your statement at the Police Station.

I totaly agree with you, I too am ashamed of these arrogant Yobbs.
BlueHawaii, don't let this put you off, just be aware and on your guard as you would normally do anywhere in the world.
LOS is a wonderfull place to be. Don't let a few idiots determine where you can or can not to go for enjoyment.

All generalization aside and after living 1 year in Thailand and 3 in the Philippines I can make this much-saying analogy.
When people meet you in the PI, you are “Sir”. When they get to know you, you become “Your first name” (but respectfully so).
When people meet you in the Thailand, you are “the farang.” When they get to know you, you stay “the farang.”
(To verify this, do what I did: learn Thai, but don’t speak it with your Thai co-workers (so they don’t know you understand them). You will be amazed what they say about you, or how they refer to you.
In my opinion, Thais are amongst the most nationalistic (borderline racist) minded people in Asia. Maybe, just maybe, this is the result of the behavior/mindset of farangs in Thailand, maybe it is just in the Thais blood.
More on topic: the PI is just as safe or dangerous as any place in the world. You can get mugged in Beverly Hills and in the shanty towns of Manila.

I think that you're spot on, Scobie.
LOS is a paradise of cheap drink and cheap women. Both drinking and whoring are seen to be macho activities, therefore it's only natural that it often attracts the types who consider themselves to be these sorts of guys. Drink and drugs are mind altering substances and add to that the petty jealousies that are aroused when females are added into the equation and the macho posturing that ensues and you have a dangerous cocktail.
The English scum that have been mentioned are the same ones that would pick a fight over here in Blighty once lagered up. The majority of English guys are of a milder disposition, me included hopefully. I've hardly ever been in a fight in my life, I avoid trouble. Even in this forum however, there is an element of macho posturing military types, who like to brag about the size of their weapons and don't you just know that they're not the "Coward of the County" types who will run away from trouble. In another thread, there are Hell's Angels in Pattaya, who apparently help raise money for charity and help little old ladies with their knitting. But nobodys fooled; they're scum too.
There is this Farang element over there from all Western nationalities, as there is also the equivalent Thai faction. In both cases, drink and girls are two of the main sparks that can ignite the tinderbox.
From the perspective of human nature, everything is normal here, but in concentrated form. It is all a giant mating ritual, the females displaying, the males posturing, sometimes the alpha male needs to assert his domination. We're supposed to be more civilised that that, but either the more Neanderthal specimens, or the drunk ones, seem to revert back to an earlier stage of evolution. If it comes to fight or flee, I'm a fleer every time. That way, I get to survive and sow my seed elsewhere.
