I have plenty of paki, indian, sri lankan friends and can tell them apart. easy to tell when observing the tone of the skin as well as build
yes, easy to tell. indigenous pakis generally more middle eastern/central asian in build and complexion. many indistinguishable from iranians, turks and even europeans (esp. from the north and west, where blond hair and blue eyes are not uncommon). the ones that appear closer to north indians are mostly migrants from india, which is why many people confuse pakis/indians. similarly, light-skinned indians usually trace roots back to what is now pakistan. u certainly cannot mistake a south indian/sri lankan for a paki, altho bangladesh also has some mixed blood.

sorry about the geography lesson!

Thanks for the inputs. You can, however, mistake a Sri Lankan for an Indian, or a Bangladeshi for an Indian, just as many Pakistanis can be mistaken for Indians. The point is, skin tone, facial features, etc are not conclusive pointers. Indians in the far north east have features similar to Nepalese, Burmese, Thais. There are also light skinned Indians (descended from Iran) who can be mistaken for Europeans, just as some cherubic folks from the far northern hills in India could be mistaken for other nationalities. Line up pictures of cricketers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and B'Desh and try telling them apart

If you do manage to converse with people from the subcontinent or be in their midst for some time you may tell them apart based on your own knowledge, but it would be interesting to test your skills by telling apart strangers by using criteria like skin tone, build, etc.

Also, counter to magnum's typical assumption that you were being scammed by the taxi driver, it's a very easy mistake to misunderstand "Entertainment Plaza" and "Plaza Entertainment" - especially in a language that frequently switches word positions.

Not saying that it couldn't have been a commission-drive 'mistake', but sometimes it's good to give them the benefit of the doubt.

... was he victimized by the notorious Thai taxi scammers?. or,innocently misled by Thai taxi driver taking him to a notorious for hosting the Thai taxi scam ("Yes, yes, this is Nana Entertainment Plaza")... could be coincidental, but I guess we will not know with 100% certainty.

... I don't know D-squared... were he asking to take him to "Thai Ministry of Tourism South Campus Cultural Conference Center Exhibitors Emergency Entrance", I could manage 'benefit of the doubt'.

... but, if there is one word any Thai taxi driver understands, it has GOT to be "Nana"... I am quite cynical on Thai behaviors within a broad field of situations, this one is hard to buy as honest mistake.

... all part of the tuition when arriving Thailand.

kaymanx,

you're right about multiethnicity in both pakistan and india. but the original comment was about descriminating between the 'average' indian, pakistani, sri lankan, etc., and by average I assume you mean 'typical'. let me assure u that its very easy to tell the average pakistani from an average indian, sri lankan, or bangladeshi. many pakistanis escape notice because they don't appear 'subcontinental' in western clothes in the first place!

but I can see that a casual observer may confuse nationality, or that there are many 'atypical' cases as well. it's just like many wouldn't be able to tell east asians apart, but if you know the countries a little bit, you can easily tell the korean from the japanese, for instance.

And interestingly, East Asians (and to some degree, Southeast Asians) do not tell each OTHER apart primarily on the basis of things like skin color and facial appearance (an endeavor made much more difficult due to the Chinese f***ing spilling their seed and deeply insinuating themselves into the economy and society EVERYWHERE in Asia over the past several hundred years, hahaha), but rather by things like style of dress, and also body language/posture.

These markers trigger an almost perfectly accurate level of ID waaaay before more "definite" markers like hearing the language one speaks...

Hmm, afraid I have to pass on that one...any observations on the subject would likely sound racist coming from a non-Asian, despite having spoken SEAsian languages and hanging in various cultures for 25+ years, haha...
