Hey everyone. I think this should be in another section of the forum, but I can only post here, so... anyways, my question is about 3 things.
1. Scuba Diving ( where are your top spots to dive (if you do so) and can you get a certification there? If so, how much and how long does it usually take to get? Is it worth it?
2. Spear fishing... Can you even do this in Thailand? Ive never done it before but I would like a guide to show me how to do this, if it could be done.
3. Snorkeling (what is your favorite spots? or spots to avoid.
Again, any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, 5 days, Phukets a good place, so many dive shops.
Best diving is the Similans and if you want to go further, Burma Banks. These days you can do day trips to the Similans, transfer up the coast in Phang Nga and speedboat out.
Quality of dive facilities has improved tremendously in the last 15 years.
2. You answered yourself.
3. I like Paradise and Freedom beaches in Phuket. You can drive out to Freedom these days I believe or take a longtail. They are on the left side of the mouth of Patong Bay.
Far more info available on the web, just a taste and my fingers are tired now.

Pattaya is another place where you can learn to dive. From what I've been told diving is just ok.

Samui would come way above Pattaya as a second choice....from there you have Koh Tao which has some good dive sites.

Best is west IMHO.
But depends on the time of year and the weather. Did a live aboard last easter off the burma banks, and never f_cking thought I'd get back alive. sh_t it was scary. The cook was praying on the back deck!
Pattaya, not the best, but some great stuff there. Dont write it off, hey? Got back this morning from a great days diving yesterday. Koh Rin. Its all shallow stuff, crap rock and sand bottom below 10 meters, Lovely coral gardens from 10 meters up to the islands. There are some wrecks there, which I do about once a month, but you need to book the boat specially.
Shoals of Barracuda, Long toms, Yellow jacks, all hunting the squid. Pretty coral, calm seas, and two nights in Pattaya - tough hey?
God I love Thailand!

Look, on the spearfishing thing:
Only been to two places I have dived where spearfishing was OK - and was done on a regular basis.
Spain and Brasil.
There may be more, I dunno. I dont want to know!
The diving sucked, man!!
OK,OK it was good, but could have been totally awseome, but it wasn't!
Brasil they don't know anything better anyway. Boy, its even legal to shoot people, so why not a fish or two. Spain I couldn't understand? Nao importa!
All the big 'trophy' fish, you know, the sort of exciting stuff you love to see when you dive, well it all took off as soon as a diver went anywhere near the place. They can see much further than you anyway, so that was the end of any decent fish watching. It was like going to a city that sarin gas had been used on the day before. Dead, sterile, empty.
It was all scared off by divers shooting spearguns.
Motherf_cking spearguns should be banned - NO, they should be used. Used to buttf_ck all those stupid macho motherf_ckers who want to destroy decent diving and shoot all the fish.
Just my humble opinion.

DJB, phuket as others said, I have a friend who has a huge dive company, if you want to contact him, let me know by PM.
Snorkelling is good anywhere around certain islands, but also around some islands off Koh Chang, one in particular we went to had crystal clear water and heaps of fish, all just off the jetty as well.
As for spearfishing, well if you want to do it you can, I saw some locals and farangs doing it of an island from Koh Chang, they also sell the spear guns here, so if they sell it, go for it, personally I dont like it since a shark came up behind me one day and grabbed the fish, spear and all I had just hit, scared the crapper out of me.
