DVDs.. where is the best place to buy these in Bkk and what should I expect to pay??

Nintendo.. My grandsons have a Playstation2 which I bought them last year. I tried to get them discs from Bkk and discovered that they use a different system in Asia and the discs are not compatible..

Does Nintendo do the same thing?? If they do, can a Nintendo unit bought in Bkk be used in the USA?? I know the voltages are different, but often they have adaptors built in.

The other part of this is whether hooking an Asian unit up to a US TV would work??

The savings on the games is substantial .. and worth going thru the effort, at least for me.

Oaktoad,
You can go to radio shack and have them unlock the code. Friend of mine bought lots of dvd from BKK and did the same. Don't know all the details but radio shack can help you to run those dvd here in US. I am planning to buy some myself If I make it LOS next time

the local tv system in thailand is PAL, whereas the US uses NTSC - they have different framerate and resolution. even if you buy a PAL console in thailand and bring it over, you'll still need a pal-ntsc converter to play on the NTSC tv. you can, of course, buy the PAL tv just for game playing, but that's a bit overindulgent, isn't it? (if so, do you need another grandson? i am only 27!)

however! if you get a modchip for ps2, you can play japanese ps2 games since japan also uses NTSC system.

If you want copied DVDs then go to Pantip Plaza, there are loads of places and I think going rate is 200bt per disc.
Also, the ones I picked up in April were playable on all zones so you don't have to worry about that. The only thing is picture quality which is a bit hit and miss. Some were crystal clear, others were unwatchable. Thats the gamble with the low price I guess. They also have lots of "adult" titles aswell if thats what you're after.

To play the PS1 and PS2 video games, you need to buy a mod-chip.  It comes with easy instructions on how to install and can be done with little/no help.  Once you have it installed, you can play the BKK games as well as games you buy in the US.  The BKK games are great because you can play the top games for about $2 each.  Here is the site where you can order the chip... http://www.consolesource.com

the dvds i've bought in thailand were labeleled region 2 or ALL, but only 2 out of 3 would play in my dvd player. but all could play on my laptops dvd player. i finally figured out that these can be played on a dvd writer/player for some brands such as phillips or so. since these are all copies. so you may want to think about buying a dvd-r for oyur television to play 100% of copied dvds from thailand. they are running about $800 now.

as for dvds:

buying them in the market from the street traders: in July 2002 it was 100baht per disk, and about 70 if you were buying 50+ quality is usually pretty good... but thailand is the worse place in asia for dvds.. go to Beijing... best quality, return service, cheap!
for games... the games depend on what machine they are bought for... xbox, Ps2 and ps1 can all be chipped at home, and then all the asian games should work. PS games are cheap as chips, xbox games were about 500baht from MBK, although they should be alot cheaper by now. Dreamcast games were also incrediably cheap... one place in malaysia sold me a game for a ringet.. about 18p, or less than 30c!

btw for dvds, they can either come as coded for asian region, or as uncoded.. if uncoded then they will work anywhere, if coded, you need a multi-region dvd player, or if you are using a computer, you can use programs like dvd genie that converts the dvd player into multi-region.
hope this helps.

Looks like after drugs it'll be DVD's and software to feel Thaksin's wrath......will there be bodies all over Panthip Plaza?...They are offering a reward of 1 million baht for each copying machine confiscated, reckon the poor CD copier won't mind turning that info over. Legitimate CD plants will have to provide detailed logs of machines and output. Will it be the end of the pirate stuff.....I sure as hell hope not!!

OAKTOAD,

Try to visit FORTUNE TOWER close to the junction Asoke-Ding Daeng with Ratchadapisek. The second and third floor constitute a paradise for addicts in shopping desktops, notebooks, software, DVD's, etc. DVDs are B/.200 including case. System used is PAL.

I forgot about Panthip long ago....

Pinga,

Did you ever had problems with a DVD you bought in LOS ?

Reason I ask is I only ever bought one copy DVD in LOS. It came with a nice cover and pretty DVD label. But it contained absolutely no data (movie).

I have no DVD player on me during my upcoming stay and as such no easy access to checking the quality of the goods... Should I expect to be f_cked over like that again in Fortune Tower?
