sure the thai economy is going strong, I guess not many halfway educated farangs will deny this!
nevertheless knowing thai mentality and investment behaviour the knowledgable farangs are just concerned that everything will be blown up again 1997 style!

Bubble? What bubble? Oh the bubble from overspending, overborrowing? The bubble created by a certain PM who seems to want to slowly take over all major businesses?

Nah, no bubble here. Thais are a fiscally responsible bunch, they always save for the future.

to griffin,

the biggest fear I see for the thai economy is private overspending with credit cards. the financial institutions hand them out too freely, in my opinion.

besides that, the fundamentals look good.

The money just moves around whats bought in one shop is not bought in another, remember the good old days walking from the Butcher to the Baker and even the candle stick maker?

Now we go to Tesco's and buy the F-King lot.

Town councils helped kill off the High St shopping with parking meters and the' SS' traffic wardens, a great money making scam for the councils at the time, but no taxes from the closed down shops. Now we all trundle out of town to the hyper markets and the free parking.

The one thing I miss most is the door to door milk deliveries. It was great walking home in the early morning hours after a night on the piss and whoring, to be able to nick a bottle of fresh gold top off a door step for breakfast!!!!

Soon, you can pick up a spare bottle of milk from UK Guy's doorstep. They won't be needing one bottle any more.

Talking of empty shops.... does anyone understand what all the Indian Tailor's are all about.

I mean they are literally everywhere, there is even one in the middle of Chaweng Beach, Samui. They are always empty.

Indians are some of the richest people in Thailand (they own most of Sukhumvit), so what are these guys doing? Is being a tailor for an Indian in Thailand, the equivalent of being an english teacher for a farang in Thailand?

Is the whole thing a property scam or a cover for drug smuggling or something. They certainly are not genuine businesses from what I can see.

They are mostly about making clothes. It's what tailors do.

When your profit margin is large, you don't need as many customers. And if you own the building and pay your staff poorly, your margins improve.

Whites are some of the richest people in South Africa, so what are these guys doing? Admit it, it's a stupid question...

There are some very wealthy Indians in Thailand to be sure, but the "Chokdii 500" would still be dominated by ethnic Thais and Chinese.

Sukhumvit runs from Wireless Road to Pattaya and Inidans don't own most of it or even a meaningful fraction. They don't even own most of the portion between Wireless and Asoke. But there are pockets with a high incidence of Indian ownership.

Tailoring and innkeeping are or were two of the traditional occupations for newly arrived desi throughout the world.

They are almost all genuine business, your paranoia notwithstanding. A money-losing business can be a good strategy if you can work the tax laws and burden one shop with losses while helping the bottom line of the other stores you own.

Well, as most know, about 10% of the population controls 90% of the economy and its assets.

If there's a crash, I think it'll go up to 91% or 92%.

The people who are maxing out their credit cards and credit lines aren't the people who run and own things here.

Tailors (Indians and Thais) run very profitable businesses. Cheap semi skilled labor and cloth. Easy money. Many send their catalogs abroad. It's amazing how many frugal people in the world want to buy cheap @ss $100 suits.

;)
