You can still buy DVDs... look for someone who has a sign that says 'DVD' and ask. He'll show you some pics of movies and you can choose them there and then. As far as quality is concerned, if the movie isn't out on DVD yet then don't expect a miracle. Sometimes there will be screening copies available with good quality but the DVDs won't have all of the special features and whatnot. Ask the seller if the disc is a 'master' or not- if yes then the quality should be good. DVD-9 vs DVD-5 is just dual layer vs single layer- not necessarily better or lesser quality.

Actually the DVD-9 or DVD-5 sticker (or more usully just printed as part of the cover) is totally meaningless when it comes to knock-off DVDs bought in Thailand. I'm sure if someone thought they'd sell more copies because of it you'd be able to find 'Hello Mr Poo-Pants of Chingford, Essex' stickers on DVDs (and that doesn't mean anything because I just made it up).

The secret is this: The ones with a large printed sticker 'DVD9' are DVD5s. They come at DVD5 prices. Those with a sticker, usually gold (looks like a seal) are DVD9s with the corresponding higher price.

And of course the real secret is: They're all fakes. If they think they can get away with saying 'DVD9 better sound, has DTS' while they've got a pile of old DVDs with the DTS logo and neither a DVD5 nor a DVD9 logo on them, they will. If you smile a lot and explain that they're talking bollocks you'll get the DVD9 for the same old DVD5 price of 120B (including DVD box). And it's not like they bother putting the 'extras' on most of the time either--which might possibly account for the need for the higher capacity disks. Hmmmm...they seem to have gone from 100B to 120B already in the last few months. I suspect the attempt to screw unsuspecting punters out of 180B for the same thing is probably due to having to pay more tea money to the MIB. All the American's fault, of course. Them and their bloody IP (Intellectual Property) rights...and blackmailing the Thai government with not taking anti-dumping levies off shrimp... As has already been explained DVD5 vs DVD9 is nothing to do with quality, it's a capacity thing. Oh and I've bought several 'DVD9' disks (with stickers) for the old prices recently and they're still DVD5. God help us when they discover DVD10 and DVD18! PS I usually stick to Si Lom for DVDs, they seem to be far more honest about the quality and more willing to refund if you get a dud.

Rigggghhhhhhhttttttt!!! And have you stopped for just one little moment to think about how many CDs/DVDs would be available for you to buy - at ANY price - WITHOUT Intellectual Property Rights? Duhhhhhhhhh!!! But no need to think - not when you're too busy hating whole countries - and for dumb reasons at that!

Silom does seem to be a little easier at the return policy than Suk, I have returned to both areas and Silom was fine, whereas Suk had a big bitch about it. As for other areas, I have had no ploblem returning to Pantip or particulalry Fortune, Fortune in my mind and particulalry the shop I use is very user friendly. As for the dvd9/5 or just dvd thing, buggered if I know, but recently I got about 7 dvd9's on reco from a friend as being much bettter, to tell the truth I cannot tell the difference from a normal 120b dvd, so why pay the extra 60b for nothing. Especially if you are a tourist and you cannot view them prior to departure, you may get a couple of duds, I have had some low quality ones on many occassions and returned them no ploblem. But of course you will not know until you get home. So, if it is a risk you take, better to pay the 120 than the 180 just in case. If you tell them as mentioned above, you want original copy, you DO NOT want video camera cinema copy, tell them you will come back if quality no good as you have a dvd at hotel. They should then give you good copies. I dont think they go out of their way to give out bad copies, but every now and then machines must get tired and make a bad copy and it gets thrown into the pile.

Don't be so very, very stupid--where did I say I hate the whole country? Did you read my post or just see a reference to the US and shoot your mouth off? God! Why are you so sensitive? I don't hate the whole country (I'm even married to one FFS!). The point (as far as this thread and buying knock-off DVDs is concerned) is that the Thai government is currently being told by the US government that unless it does something about CD, DVD and software piracy then the 'anti-dumping' tariffs on Thai shrimp will remain artificially high. OK? Got the picture? Read the papers? Join the dots? Thais need to sell shrimp. Thais sell knock-off DVDs. Americans make Thai shrimp expensive unless they stop knock-off DVD sales. Thai police told to stop knock-off DVD sales. More tea money demanded by MIB. Knock-off DVD prices go up. Oh and if the Digital Millenium Copyright Act is such a good idea, why have there been so many problems with it? Pop over to http://writ.news.findlaw.com/student/20030519_karl.html (or lots of other places) if you want to see how little thought was given to it.

MarcC: YOUR statement below stands on its own without need for my further comment, and despite your later feeble attempt to justify or ameliorate it: "All the American's fault, of course. Them and their bloody IP (Intellectual Property) rights" Now if your writing does NOT express what you intended, then you need to learn how to write in a way that does, as the above is pretty clear cut. Notwithstanding the above, you follow up below with the absurd reasoning process why enforcement of IP rights, by America - or any country for that matter - is wrong: 1) "Thais need to sell shrimp. 2) Thais sell knock-off DVDs. 3) Knock-off DVD prices go up." (by 20 whole Baht), 4) because of protection by a country of its IP Rights, 5) THEREFORE: "bloody IP rights" are not good. Now that's SOME connecting of the dots, mate. Sheeeeesssshhhh!!! Whether Thais need to sell shrimp, DVDs, or even pussy has NOTHING to do with the inherent VALIDITY of IP Rights or trade protection of them. So Thais need to protect their shrimp sales - but other countries DON'T need to protect their IP rights and subsequent sales? WTF??? Problems with the DMCA incidentally, are mostly from people like yourself, the I-don't-give-a-damns, who have no clue to the below realities of life. Since you don't seem to get it, or don't want to, let me spell it out for you step-by-step: 1) Without Intellectual Property Rights there is no way to establish ownership for control of copyright or patent infringement; 2) without ownership controls on infringement then there is no way to protect income to the creators and marketers; 3) without income to the creators and marketers there is no incentive for them to spend the talent and capital to produce CDs or DVDs - OR the content to place on them them; 4) and without incentive there are no more CDs or DVDs (or inventions for that matter) ! Duhhhhhhh!!! Now - capish? The problem mate is NOT in IP Rights per se - you are tilting at the WRONG windmill. The problem was caused by the past price-gouging by labels, CONTINUES by their ill-fated legal struggles to hold on to the last vestiges of their monopolistic legacy, and is only EXACERBATED by people like yourself. And yes - during this unprecedented transitional state it is not easy to instantaneously craft a document that fairly balances the rights of everyone involved in the process- but it is evolving. If YOU however have some magical answer to all the complex new IP issues, than all those working on them representing all the conflicting interests, then BY ALL MEANS don't be bashful about publishing YOUR brilliant solution.
