Indeed. These phone cameras give optimal results with enough light.
My phone (Sagem myX-6) has a CCD VGA camera which gives better results in low light situations. Last week compared UKYorkie's Samsung with mine. While his screen was black, mine showed enough detail.
So, CCD is the keyword here.

3.2 megapixels is a lot! put that into a phone that can also play mp3s and i'll be set. course it'll be the size of a brick with the batteries needed to support the thing....

unfortunately it seems that the previous 2 megapixel camera (i didn't even know there was one w/that resolution) takes crap photos. so the 3 megapixel one is expected to take larger crap photos. cool looking phone, though!
one good thing about low-res shots is that, like with the photo sticker machines, they makes people look better.

How does your camera handle movement? Mine is particularly bad and it may be the action of pressing the button which causes most of the blurring in GG action shots.

As stated, under low light circumstances there is still something visible.
However, if somebody moves, the picture blurs quickly. I guess it's not my steady hand (I don't drink) but the objects who move....
Daylight... handles quite well.

Here's my take on all of this:
- camera phones are fun, and serve their purpose - which is to provide a quick and dirty means to snap a few pics and then send them using the phone.
- ever increasing resolutions on the phones defeat the purpose of sending them using the phone. 640x480 is sufficient and even overkill.
- if you want to take decent pictures, any of the Canon Elph/Ixius series will not disappoint, provide flash, and offer very good resolution and ability to take all kinds of pictures, including movies.
- what matters, aside from resolution, and the type of storage card used, is really how well the camera's algorithm at making an image look nice after it's taken is - i.e. reducing artifacts, and so on... Canon really excells at that. Sony really sucks at that.
- you'll end up carrying two devices, but the old saying applies : "The best tool for the job" Get a Nokia phone as a phone, and a Canon small camera for taking your images.

There is a combination of issues concerning low light, artificial light, movement and most importantly concealment.
Has anyone found a camera that works really well under these constraints?

Nokia 6230 has video camera too, low light mode and 10 second self timer (set timer and take picture discretely)

Most phones have some sort of key guard.
A very good mobile phone program for (and against) TGs BGs wives etc is called 'Blacklist'...
