Never any complaints whereever I buy - tend to buy most up at ChiangMai. Always changes them if there is a problem - but very rarely is there a problem.

Has anyone seen "dual layer" dvd's coming out of Pantip yet??

Yes, they are called 'DVD9' in local parlance. I've been buying them from Panthip since 2003.

Dr. von Quack!

Had a bit of spare time today and discovered the following:

I've just checked my "DVD9" movies and unfortunately they are "DVD5" due to the fact that not one of them is greater than 4.7G. I even went through and made sure I checked disks I bought from different vendors. While the little "DVD9" logo is reassuring, no way are they.

I've got to admit that I was a bit surprised when you said you have been buying them for years, as the media is relatively new, and I would presume worth a lot more than 80-100 baht based on prices here.

So unless I have a fundamental misunderstanding of what DVD9 is, I guess my original question is still open, anyone seen/heard of REAL DVD9 (aka dual layer) movies coming out of Panthip??

Maybe I just have a fundamental misunderstanding of what a “Thai” DVD9 is….

Yes, but did you pay 100 baht for the latest release?? I think we both know that it is obvious that you have taken the discussion out of context now....

As I told earlier, there are two sorts of 'DVD9' stickers:

- one common looking one (no real DVD9). Just DVD5s sold at 100-120 baht.
- one fancy looking (golden one). These are real DVD9s sold for a higher price (around 200 baht or so).

An example of a real DVD9 is the 'Fourty Licks' DVD of the Rolling Stones. Carries around four hours of stuff.

No...for DVD 9's I generally paid 150B a disc.

and I'd say most of them didn't come from Panthip Plaza.

DVD media - in it's current form - holds 4.7 gig. Anyone claiming to have more than 4.7 gig on a disk is full of Hooey. IMHO. Yeah 150 to 160 for DVD9 - the only kind I will buy. Get mine at Seacon 3rd floor - above Robinson. Top of the esclator & near the metal circular staircase.

Well, they have been making then available (genuine DVD9 media) since 2003, when I first bought them, but while the media was genuine sandwiched DVD9, the content was always the 4.7GB of a DVD5 - it was one of the things I mentioned in one of my reports, that the DVD9 label was being used more for marketing, than actual use.

This changed later, as some disks started to include data in excess of 5gb - though they were rare.

Good recommendation - I'll try there on my next visit - by the way, in terms of capacity, you are talking consumer media. The commercial DVD9 media, especially if you have the manufaturing capacity, barely costs a few cents more than the regular DVD5 media - hence, making it an affordable gimmick to try to charge more.

An interesting thing I have noticed on this trip, is that there are some different types of DVD9 media (and I use the term loosely, here) -- the regular sandwiched ones, which can be identified by the glue bubbles, and some new DVD media that is nearly transparent (hold it up against the light to see), and is a total fake (4.35 gb of capacity, because it's a cheap single-layer media). In the past, at least the single-layer disks were opaque enough to yield the impression of being able to be dvd9s.

Dr. von Quack!

P.S. not even entertaining anymore...

Proper DVD 9's would hold 8.5 GB

DVD 9 is used as a marketing tool here in Asia. DVD 9 and DVD 5 are classifications of disc capacity and have nothing to do with quality. DVD 9 replication machines are twice the cost of DVD 5 machines. I would not be surprsied that most pirate discs are in fact DVD 5 even if they are labeld as DVD 9. I doubt the sellers themsleves know the difference. Most consumers are clueless.
