Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 23 November 2006 :- Huge discounts given to lift sluggish sales =============================== To make up for sluggish sales growth this year, the country's two largest department store chains - The Mall and Central - are offering massive discount promotions to boost sales entering the holiday season. A lacklustre economy, weighed down by high energy costs, soaring inflation and political turmoil, caused both department stores to show only single-digit growth in the first nine months of the year, compared with double-digit growth last year. To boost sales, the chains are launching last-minute marketing promotions in the hope that spending will jump 20% above regular retail transaction values during the peak shopping period. Discount coupons of up to 50% will be distributed at sales points, a first for Thailand, according to Natsamon Vongkittipat, assistant chief marketing officer of The Mall Group, which operates The Emporium, The Mall and Siam Paragon department stores. Ms Natsamon said that poor sales have also forced the group to offer 25% discounts at supermarkets if customers use certain credit cards and sign up for the DTAC Maximize plan offered by the mobile-phone company. Competition in the retail industry has been intense since the deluxe Siam Paragon centre opened a year ago. The opening next month of the new-look Zen Department Store at CentralWorld should add more heat to the sector. Tomorrow The Mall Group will kick off its "20 Million Thanks" campaign in conjunction with Siam Piwat, the operator of Siam Center and Siam Discovery, Land Rover (Thailand), Major Development and Dynasty Co. The 250-million-baht promotion will run until Jan 7. Central Department Store plans to launch its 150-million-baht "Let's Celebrate 2007" campaign today at its Chidlom branch, said an executive, speaking on condition of anonymity. Central aims to generate up to 6.5 billion baht in sales from its 14 Central department store outlets during the 46-day campaign. "We offer the best deals of the year to our customers, who can buy a new 46-inch Samsung LCD TV with a 50% discount or have a chance with every purchase of 1,000 baht to visit the Santa Claus village in Finland," he said. Shoppers appear to be ready to take advantage of the new promotions, said Phaibul Kanokvatanawan, executive vice-president of The Mall Group. He added that sales at The Mall, The Emporium and Paragon during the 45-day campaign should reach 5.9 billion baht. The promotion is expected to boost the group's overall sales to 40 billion baht by the end of this year.
