Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 27 November 2006 :-

Robinson plans to open seven new outlets by 2010
=====================================

Ayutthaya - Robinson Department Store Plc, the country's third largest department store chain, is moving ahead with its investment plan to open at least 7 department stores by 2010.

President Preecha Ekkunagul said three stores would be opened within the next two years: in Phuket at the Jungcelon shopping complex and the new Central shopping malls in Chon Buri and Khon Kaen. The remaining four stores would be located in both Bangkok and upcountry. Each outlet will occupy between 10,000 and 15,000 square metres of retail space and cost between 200 million and 500 million baht depending on space. Each would create 400 to 500 new jobs.

Mr Preecha said the company was confident that the country's economy would continue to grow although the political outlook was unclear at the moment.

''We have not been affected by the government's retail measures,'' he said, referring to recent efforts to persuade large operators to curb expansion in order to protect small businesses.

''I hope the government will amend the constitution and can hold an election next year. Also, continuing construction of national infrastructure will stimulate more money to flow in our country.''

Mr Preecha believes department stores have more potential to grow in Thailand, both in the capital and in the provinces, compared with other countries where the markets are more established.

The expansion of new housing projects and the opening of new roads have created new communities, resulting in new demand for department stores, he said.

Apart from new outlets, Robinson also plans to renovate its existing stores including the Chiang Mai branch. In addition, it expects to spend another 300 million baht on marketing programmes next year.

Mr Preecha said the company planned to apply a ''dynamic simplicity'' concept, under which it could easily change product displays or graphic design to match consumer demand and market trends.

He acknowledged that the retail market this year was slower than last year because of a combination of negative factors including oil prices, political problems and the recent flooding across 50 provinces.

Robinson hopes to get consumers in the mood to do more shopping by spending 50 million baht during the festive season from Nov 24 to Jan 15 to achieve 10% sales growth by the end of this year.

Mr Preecha said the company would focus on three factors to maintain its growth next year: new house-brand fashion products at affordable prices, attractive store de{aac}cor and enhanced services.

Currently, Robinson has 20 house-brand products for men and women including Union Pacific, Beyond Basic, Yin Yang and Central Moda.

''All house-brand fashion products not only contributed good sales but also help us to gain new customers and maintain regular customers at the same time,'' he said.

Sales of its house brands grew by up to 30% in the first nine months of this year, compared with the same period last year, and growth was even higher in some categories.
