Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 9 April 2007 :-

Gaysorn to make Amarin Plaza a luxury mall
=================================

Convinced that the Ratchaprasong district of Bangkok still does not have enough quality retail outlets, Gaysorn Holdings plans to take its recently acquired Amarin Plaza more upmarket.

While several new development projects have popped up in the area, at least two new retail projects will make Phloen Chit Road home. They include Central Retail Corporation's project on land it acquired from the British Embassy, and the lifestyle centre of Maneeya Center Group.

''We will develop a new project in this area as we see the importance of Ratchaprasong, the heart of Bangkok. We want to develop it as a shopping district like the Ginza of Japan,'' said Charn Srivikorn, director of Gaysorn Holdings.

''With more new alliances from the retail projects coming up, it will help this district expand continuously.''

This fits with the company's recent acquisition of Erawan Ratchaprasong, the owner and operator of the Amarin Plaza shopping mall, in a transaction worth 300 million baht.

Mr Charn expects to finish the project handover in June. After that, he would discuss with Amarin Plaza's 300 commercial office and retail tenants a strategy to make improvements to better meet consumer needs.

As well, he will send a research team to gather information about the best ways to fill the 28,000 square metres of retail space.

''We expect that Thailand's economy will be revived again around June next year due to new policies from the new government. So, during this time we will put our efforts into research and buying more plots of land,'' he said.

Mr Charn added that Gaysorn was continuing to invest this year despite the lack of clear government policy because it believed in the country's tourism business.

To raise tourist confidence, Mr Charn said the company planned to join with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to spend 20 million baht installing new closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area with similar technology to that used in London.

Mr Charn said that Gaysorn and its partners in the district would allocate a budget to woo foreign tourists for a mid-year sales campaign scheduled to start in June. He said that retail consumption in Singapore and Hong Kong in 2006 was very good because both markets have clear economic policies.
