Hi,

I have heard that there is a shop, or market, where it is possible to buy pretty well anything electrical/computer related, including pirated software/DVDs/porn.  Does anyone know where this is?  I have heard that during clampdowns the stock is moved into vans that circle the stores, and if you ask discreetly enough you will be directed to one of the vans from which you will be able to get what you want.  Is this true?  Is this safe?  How much should I expect to pay per CD (I have found it is FAR easier to bargain when I know the market price - goes for everything else, not just for girls!), and how likely am I to be sold something substandard?

the place you are wanting to look at is panthip plaza, a 5 storey shopping center specialised at computer, electronics, software and dvd. the price for sofdtware is 100 baht per cd for dvd about 150 baht. just walk around the 100 something shops, it is an electronics freak heaven!

Just and FYI.

Just remember that whatever software you buy and run on your computer could either have a virus embedded, might not work, or mess up your system. Just keep that in mind. So I would only run this software on personal systems and not on any company systems.

I have heard two horror stories. One involved a friend or mine, and  the other involved a friend of a friend.

My friend had bought the MS 2000 professional upgrade. When installing the upgrade it replaced/deleted some reg files that should not have been touched, thus rendering the computer useless. Would not boot up after installation. So, the computer had to be wiped and the OS, reinstalled from an authorized disk. Now everything works fine.

The friend of a friend bought a game and when he installed it on his computer, it wiped his hard drive clean, as in no data found.

I still buy software from this place, but am careful from which vendor. I also just remember that if you pay $2.50 for software that should cost $300 or more, then sometimes get what you paid for.

ABC,

In your last paragraph you mentioned  "Just remember that if you pay US $ 2.50 for software that should cost US $ 300 or more, then sometimes you get what you paid for "

This reminds me of the saying " If you pay peanuts, then you get monkeys "

Or as Confucius said :

" Good things are not cheap
Cheap things are not good "

Sometimes, applied to girls as well but not always .

True.  Maybe it 'should' cost $300 or more, but it costs under a dollar to copy.  Not saying it is right, but those are the economics.  Confucious's saying is true for many things most of the time, girls included as PL69 noted.  But while I cannot have a specific great girl at the same time as you (well, I suppose I *could*...lol...but you know what i mean), additional bootlegs can be easily produced, so there is no shortage of supply.  Hence, where the rule of law and regulation does not stop software that costs under a dollar to copy being copied, there'll be loads of it going at around that price.

Also, the people involved in pirating have no incentive to sell low grade goods - they don't want pirated goods to get a worse name than they currently have.  While the producers of bona fide software DO have an incentive for pirated copies to be virus-ridden and problematic.  Telling you, if *I* ran a bona fide software business, I would put in code that mutated into viruses when the software was illegally copied.  I'd also try to flood the pirate market with seriously dodgy goods.  Not saying that they do, just saying that I would.

But point taken:  I'll download the latest virus software and run anything I buy through it.

Will everyone in Bangkok know where Panthip Plaza is?  Or will one of you lovely people give me a location?

Thanks!

Newbie

A simple solution... Run virus software on anything you put in your computer, before installing it.  Second make sure that your anti-virus definitions are up to date.  As for not getting what is advertised.... the Romans said it best..... Let the buyer beware.  If it looks to good to be true...it might be.
