Samsonite

Quote: from CalEden on 7:31 pm on Mar. 25, 2010
Three years ago the nite before an LOS trip whilst packing, I noticed all but one screw was missing from one of the hinges. No choice/time so off to a full mark up retailer for the latest hard skinned Samsonite suitcase (on sale for $7,500 baht). I was told by the sales clerk that the Samsonite suitcases have a life time warranty. Just send back to Samsonite on your baht and they will repair for free.

You used to be able to get these same Samsonite suitcase's at Costco for $3,300 baht.

Those screws won't come out on their own.
Have you stayed at the Sunshine Residence Hotel on Soi 8 in Pattaya?
I came back to that hotel early one afternoon to find the maintenance
staff, who were suppose to be there fixing the a/c, in the process of trying to open my suitcase.
It was a Samsonite with a titanium frame and a 10 year warranty. There were 3 hinges across the back with 2 screws in each hinge. They had the screws out of two hinges and were working on the third when I walked in. Don't know how they thought they were going to get away with it. The screws were not meant to be removed (that requires a special screwdriver) and by removing them they ruined the suitcase. Plus, had they gotten it open they would have had to destroy the interior lining, not to mention..... hell, it would have destroyed the front locks when they pulled it open. They really don't think even 5 minutes ahead....

I raised hell with the staff behind the desk, but they declined responsibility
and refused to pay for the suitcase.
After cooling down a bit I went to a Internet shop and logged into my e-mail account where I had sent myself a copy of the hotel reservations. I don't even remember the guy's title, but I wrote him a long message telling him what happened.
He didn't reply, but a couple of days later the maid was demoted to cleaning the lobby, which meant no more tips for her from the guests.
She had been standing watch outside my door, but was so busy taking inventory of her cart she didn't see me until I said hello as I was walking through the open door to into the room.
I never saw any of the maintenance staff again. I assume they were fired.

I tried putting some glue on the screws and putting them back in, but no go... ruined beyond repair, so I bought a Thai knock off of a Samsonite called, "Sammerry."
Leave it to the Thais. The combination locks on each side were install upside down. No joke. You either have to turn your head to read them or flip it over to view the numbers correctly.

Thank's Samsonite, I remember reading your original post years ago. I have never stayed at Sunshine Residence Hotel. Because I noticed the problem when preparing for the next trip I can not be sure. I never had anything missing. I thought of your post at the time and it does appear that the screws should not have worked their way out. Just one of those little mysteries.

Mr Alan
I was staying at a hotel in the USA one time and I had a hard Samsonite luggage case. When I left the room, I locked the case using the built-in key lock, which only had my return airline ticket inside. The maid (or someone) tried to break into the luggage. I know this because I saw severe scratches all over the lock. From that time on, I always leave my luggage open, and if I have something valuable or important then I take it with me or make other arrangements to secure it (in-room safe, safety deposit box at front desk, etc).

Mr Alan
Probably the reception deposit boxes are safe enough, but I would prefer my Samsonite to a room mini safe any day.
This is because I saw how easy it was for security to open my room safe without a code when staying at Baybreeze, Pattaya.

You could tether the suitcase with a laptop security cable to furniture in the room.

Usually my case is pretty full and weighs about 20 kilo, if a 45Kg spinner maid wants to nick that good luck to em.

For what it's worth:
There is a "Luggage Repair" shop on Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thong Lor), as you are traveling away from Sukhumvit, left hand side, past the large MacDonalds in the shopping complex and before Camillian Hospital.

Have not tried it personally, but just might, jammed wheel on a carryon, just to check their prices.

Problem with hiding your stuff in a Samsonite is that you loose all your money inside, plus they ruin your luggage. I never had any problem with break-ins into my in-room safe. Probably there is a difference between maids/maintenance workers and security. Of course, I use AMX travelers checks, and don't keep large amounts of cash in the safe, so I can always get my travelers checks refunded.

Yes same for me, I have very little money left in my suitcase usually less than 5000 baht, losing my passport is my main worry.
With my present samsonite, it is still pretty good considering it's age, however when pulling it along it does tend to lose balance sometimes whereas the newer 4 wheel versions seem to handle better.
