i'm working in bkk for a year or two. I have housing with the company near MBK. I want to get sofa/couch and floor lamp etc.. to upgrade my place. Where can I get something that's ok quality, but not too expensive as I wont be keeping it (i may end up here longer, but who knows).

the mattress, if you can call it that, is not too comfortable, so I'm also looking for a place to get some kind of padding to make it a bit more sleepable.

finally, where is there a decent, ie not expensive dry cleaner in Siam Square area (or other places, as a BTS trip would be worth a good per piece price).

thanks for any suggestions.....

MBK has furniture shops on the 6th (I think) floor. Some are quite reasonable, and all will deliver. Couches are widely variable in price/quality, and you generally get what you pay for. Not a good place to skrimp, if you plan on sitting on it very much.

Index stores are good for small items.

Too bad you just missed the Furniture Fair...

There was a second-hand shop on Sukhumvit 49, just inside the soi. They buy and sell a lot of used stuff from Japanese students: lamps, tables, misc appliances, etc. I wouldn't suggest making a special trip there, as I'm not certain they are still there, but next time you're over that way, it might be good to check it out.

I had a very good mattress made at a place on Petchburi Rd, just west of Phaya Thai Rd., at the Ratchwithi BTS stop, north side of Petchburi Rd.. They make them for many hotels. One 6" layer of firm foam sandwiched between two layers of 1" soft foam is standard, but I had them put 2" of soft foam on top of the 6" firm foam, and it was PERFECT. Takes only a couple of days to turn around, but you need to leave it there for three weeks or so for the glue solvent to dissipate...Phayathai Mattress was the name of the shop, I believe. A 3.5 foot (twin size) was about 3000 baht, and a 6 ft (king) was about 5000, 5 years ago. Probably more now. They can probably sell you some kind of pad to go on top of your existing mattress, too.

Good luck.
