Boy
Has anyone ever been to Chatuchak Markets.
Are they worth visiting ?
Can I find any real bargains on clothes, arts and crafts ?
Or do they sell the same items as all the other markets around Bangkok ?
How many hours do you need to spend to have a real good look around ?
Is this a favourite "hang out" for pick pockets ?
Anything else I should be cautious of ?
Sky Train or taxi from Siam Square ?

Any assistance appreciated.

Clothes are very well priced, it is a huge rabbit warren, so you need heaps of time to have a good look. But be prepared to get lost several times. All the other stuff seems to be priced ok, but up to your local knowledge and bargaining skills as well, it is also bloody hot in there. Pick pockets, no worse than anywhere else, never been picked or even attempted to be picked anywhere in Los yet. Skytrain is best from Siam, just a short walk at the other end.

Oz
Highly recommended, but carry some water. It's the size of 8 Football fields! Plenty of safe places to Eat & Drink but be prepared to get lost. From memory most of it is only open on Saturday & Sunday. It opens early, you don't want to be there mid afternoon!

Depends what one is looking for from CCM (Chatuchak Market) but I say they DO NOT sell the same stuff.
Well , of course You find some of it but the place is a treasurehunters dream.
Definately and absolutely worth visiting.
PM me if You wish to know more.

During the years I have found a lot of items and spent 5-6 hrs per trip in there.

I cannot give sharp directions about which is where but in the "Plants"-section there are places to find a leathersmith making cases and boxes. Found a stingray-covered beltholder for my Zippo and a crocskin one for Leatherman tool.

In same area there is a mom&pop-team having a desk selling custom-made folders and knives.
Huba-hibbity-hibbity-hibbity lookers/performers...

Surplus section has provided me a good miniflashlite (Usa 99 USD , CCM 2200 Baht) and Al Mar Sere 2000-folder (Usa 189 USD , CCM 4000 Baht).

Clothing is priced cheaper than Suk / Silom and even a touch cheaper than Baiyoke.

Antiques-section is not my game , but have seen a lot of interesting things.
Best coffees can be found around and near antiques-section.Never problems.

Oz gave a valid points:Drink water , dehydration is not a child's game.
I'd say normal caretaking keeps You safe from pickpocketing.

And a one more thing:Buy bandanna from there , You are sweating a lot and You'll need sweatband.

Edited in later:
What comes to losing directions , in this place You can find Yourself unable to locate Your positon.

But the clocktower in the middle of the market can give You some hint , where in the CCM You are , if You see it.

From memory most of it is only open on Saturday & Sunday.

Certain sections are open on several days in the week like the plants section and the fish section.

There is generally activity every day of the week ....

I love antiques and wooden carvings and some handmade crafts. Also the leather section sounds cool, thanks JackRabbit.

I'l  make sure I keep myself well hydrated.
5-6 hours I'm sure it will be worth it.

Thanks everyone I will give it a go this weekend.

It's hughe and really hot. Somehow I always manage to get stuck in the dogs section and spend hours explaining to my wife why we can't buy a dog. If you take a TG there she will migrate to the cute puppy section.

Definitely one of the best shopping places in Thailand

Take the sky train to Mo Chit and you will definitely find More Shit than you can ever buy!

Go early in the morning to beat the heat, its mostly under tent type of material and by late morning its a stream room.

I've been there a few times...  Lots of cool stuff there...
Remember to bargin, bargin, bargin...

You can spend all day there, but as everyone has been saying... it's HOT...

The "pet" section has a huge selection... see the fighting roosters... the walking fish... the chipmonks... the fish... and of course the puppies....

The skytrain is (in my opinion) the only way to go...  ( Can't wait until the underground is completed, they are building a station right there

Mr Alan
You don't need to carry water with you since their are hundreds of booths selling water and other soft drinks.

Personally, I think the place is over-rated since most of the same stuff can be purchased on the streets of Sukhimvit, MBK, or other similar places. But I guess everyone should go there at least once. Take BTS Sky Train to Mo Chit stop.
