There was a mention on the Thai tones in the other threads, I will now present some sound files with Thai script, transcription (based on soc.culture.thai's method) and its meaning. Here's the first. New wood doesn't burn, right? Mai^ mai' mai" mai" mai+ (sound byte) Notice that the 3rd and 4th mai have the same tone (falling), but the first means not (doesn't) and the second means burn. The difference is evident in the Thai script. Another one. Who Sells Chicken Eggs? Khrai Khaay+ Khai' Kai' (sound byte | Thai script) This example shows you the difference in the intonation of sell (khaay+ which is a rising tone) and egg (khai' which is low). It also shows you the difference between chicken and egg. Tonewise, they are both low tone. In the word egg (khai'), notice the aspirated kh sound versus kai (chicken). You may need to listen to this several times, before you pick up the differences. Remember, listening is key in learning Thai.

Here are some Thai words that begin with the "kor kai" alphabet. Listen to them carefully. Before -- kOOn (sounds like 'korn') low tone. Cheeks -- kAAm (sounds like 'cam') falling tone. Chicken -- kai low tone. September -- kan-ya-yon normal tone. This word begins with "khor khai". Compare this sound with kai (see above). Egg -- khai low tone.
