Can't seem to get my lips around this tonal thing!
If I sing in Thai rather than speak it,am I more likely to be understood?
Just a thought.

using the correct tones helps. but the thais are great at understanding my mispronounced thai in general. I studied in somchart language school, which I can only recommend. suk soi 11 now.

I say Soi 11 to the taxi driver.
Always end up in Soi 18.

I can see how this can happen... try saying it the military way... sip neung instead. 
In the army they don't use sip-et for 11, as it can easily be mistaken for sip-jet 17. Hey, how come he didn't take you to soi 17?
