I thought there would be a thread on this. My apologies if I have missed one. Recently, my Thai sister in law told me that a girl of mine had said I was a "stupid goat" to someone on the phone. Now being a stupid goat, it didn't worry me so much, but my sister in law was mortified, and gave the girl a piece of her mind unbeknownst to me. So gents, I thought it would be good to make a thread of all the insults our LBFMs have for us, ie: the Thai transliteration and the English meaning. I think this would assist newbies and those in ignorant bliss like myself. FWIW I think "...phae khlao" = "stupid goat" if I heard correctly. Can anyone clarify.\ Cheers, Liam

You can learn them. But I would be very careful about using them. Just like the F-word in English, it may not be appropriate at all.

E is a million times worse. Unless you are a little girl being spoken of by a third person who is an adult in your village. Sometimes they'll speak of actresses on TV this way too... but they can't hear them.

Ai is for males Eee is for females. Commonly used with small children and not an insult, but not polite with adults. Can't see the point in learning insults, never bothered myself.

LiamOz, Was she Chinese Thai and were you born in the year of the goat? It is common for Chinese to use the Chinese Zodiac Sign when scolding/insulting another. For example I am the year of the Goat and if SGGirl feels that I am being too tight with my money she calls be 'Stingy Goat'...

So using Ai with a female or using Eee with a male would probably be considered insulting?

That's a damned big 'if' there mister punter. Until you can ferret out the difference between the Thai and Isaan dialects, between the live and dead syllables, and between the five tones you'll have little to show in terms of comprehension. Meanwhile, if she's clever she'll have plenty of excuses at hand.

General rule is 'Ai' to address men and 'ee' to address women. ======================================== Commonly used with small children and not an insult, but not polite with adults. ======================================== Except when being used in Chinese 'circles'. ===================================== Sometimes they'll speak of actresses on TV this way too... but they can't hear them. ===================================== I've heard this being used when addressing each other directly... most particularly in soap operas. ======================================= You can learn them. But I would be very careful about using them. Just like the F-word in English, it may not be appropriate at all. ======================================= I've yet to hear an appropriate insult....
