Gentlemen, I would like to understand what "na-yi" means in English. Because it's not easy for me to transcribe the sound in English here some explanations: na - speak the "a" like "bus" y - like in yahoo i - like "I" Perhaps you can add an additional "y" at the end, like "na-yi-y", again spoken like in yahoo. But add this only for the "feeling" of the word (or expression). If I think it over it can also be "nai-yi". Should be something related to "big head" or "big face" (as it was told to me). Thank you regards

'na yai' This demonstrates the difficulty of English transliteration of Thai words. Without context, and without indication of the tone of the word, this could mean different things: na(mid tone) yai(low tone) = big ricefield na(falling tone) yai(low tone) = big face or (farfetched): na(falling tone) yai(mid tone) = maternal grandmother's face If you really want to know what this means, give us some context, i.e., who said it, and in what circumstances...as a non-Thai speaker, your ears will not yet perceive the tones... haam sup

Hello PureMeat, The English translation of what you seek is Big Face, not too bad you may think, but in Thailand for someone to use that expression for means the following. Someone who is "big face" is a person who likes to show off that he has more money than he actually has, for example if you went out to dinner with eight people and paid the entire tab to show off that you have a lot of money when in fact you are not rich and just what to show off that you are richer than you are. A "show off" in Americam terms. So if was used in the context of describing your facial features than OK you have a big face, otherwise you are a show off.

Thanks for the info, "big face" should be the right meaning, but in the sense of "big face". Matches the existing knowledge.
