Actually,
I had this exact problem Smeg is talking about a couple of weeks ago. I sent my TGF a red firetruck toy for her son. I was trying to explain to her what I was sending, because I knew she understood the words "fire" and "truck." But together they were non-sensical to her. So I ended up having to be "mai keekeot" and looked the word up in Thai. Then she understood.

Smegma, you didn't get it (as Oaktoad thinks).
While studying Thai, it's very often helpful to learn different words, combine them and try to explain their source.
For example:
Nam - water
Tok - to fall
Hong - room
Lai - to flow
Nam Lai - Hong Nam - Nam Tok and so on
It makes it very easy to remember if you're a learner of Thai. It also explains many times why Thais speak English in a certain way.
Like Farm Snake (come from Suan Hngoo) or Paper Toilet (from Gradaht Hong Nam).
Maybe it won't be helpful in all cases, but it does a good job.... It helped me a lot in reaching fluency within a year or so.
Balls, in your case:
Rot Len - a toy car (truck)
Fai Mai - Fire
Rot Len Fai Mai - I bet it should be understood.

"Rot Len Fai Mai" -- not that anyone over the age of 2 and a 1/2 would word it that way -- is a statement that your toy car is on fire.
A fireman, in Thai, is a tamruat dap plern; a firetruck is a rot dap plern.

I was referring to a way to explain without the need of a dictionary like you always rely on.
It seems to me that you can't distinguish between speaking Thai in a practical way and the 'Thai by Dictionary' you practize.

No, it's not like "gaew" which is how I'd transliterate the word for a drinking glass.
Keow as in "man keow" has an aspirated k-sound, so it could be transliterated "kheow". The vowel sound doesn't have an exact counterpart in english vowel sounds... it's like the "ia" in "fiance" said really quickly followed by an "u" sound (like the u in 'put').
Say the whole thing quickly, with a high tone, and you're pretty close
