That sounds OK, then - I think.

Nothing as good as classroom lessons from a Thai teacher. Girlfriends don't count.

What version is that... I have the 2000 1.7.2 version and it has no tonal lines etc...

I still say its madness not to know what you are repeating... Picture of a blue ball are you saying blue ? ball ? throw ? etc... If you dont know what it is telling you how can you confidently know what you are learning ??

That's exactly right, Mr Livin.
A picture of a dog, you say "maa" and then later when you ask for a dog they bring you a horse.
With Thai you need to be 100% spot-on otherwise they will not understand you.

Reminds me of that story of that couple that went to Thailand for the first time taking their dog with them.

Visiting a restaurant in Chinatown they took the dog along. After ordering meals from the menu they thought also their companion needed a bite.

Not having followed Bkktonight Thai language clinic they pointed to the dog and the waiter said 'Aaaah!' and took the dog to the back.

Thirty minutes later the waiter returned with yet another dish and not able to speak English he pointed to the spot where the dog had laid down.....

So you see, 'mah', 'sunak' will do the job put pointing gets you also quite far..

Serves 'em right for bringing a dog to Thailand in the first place, I say!

I picked up the Pimsleur Thai 1 series after reading other boards reviews about how good it was. I come here and read a few reviews and find out some dont like it.
I can speak very basic thai (from asking how much to saying I got food poisoning).
But would like to be able to have a short converstation to break the ice with the ladys by November.
It was recommend to go with the Pimsleur, then move on to the Berlitz courses.

I'm currently using the Pimsleur Thai 1 series as well. Only up to tape 3 at the moment and just learning basic are you/not american, do/don't understand, hello, excuse me etc etc. Will agree sofar that you won't be able to chat away like the expats, but at least you will be able to communicate very effectively in saying that you can't communicate

Haven't tried others but Pimsleur is working out well, but the first tape was basic and really did know that already from learningthai.com.

The best thing about the tapes is that I listen to it in the car instead of the radio stations and I'm really learning without very much effort or having to set time aside. As there are are few websites that sell the Pimsleur tapes/cd's, not sure if they are exactly the same.

The only criticism I've found is that the girl speaks too fast. While this may be "conversational speed" - you are after all still trying to learn the words and comprehension - speed will come later. Also, found that the Pimsleur way of asking "How are you" in slightly different to the way learningthai.com tells you to do it. I recall that I was asked this question as per learningthai.com, but Pimsleur does say that you ask this question to "close friends" - so maybe the learningthai.com is a better example of the generic q..??

I know you asked about cdrom learning, but for the reason stated above, I think the tapes work the best. I've found that I can't learn unless I hear the words being pronounced - in a english - thai dictionary you really need your tgf to correct you in saying the words properly.

Cheers

This brings up a point.
Amazon has an affiliate system as well. http://bangkoktonight.com/ has a Thai language page.

Why not create an affiliate account with Amazon, and link to books, tapes, etc? The cut is small, but so is the setup.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html/ref=gw_bt_as?node=3435371

Says the cut is up to 10%.

---Edit: 4/22/04---

Oops. Didn't see that there is page with said Amazon affiliate links already, hidden amongst all the other links. Lots of information on this site; sometimes more than I can see at once.
