GTG - Good To Go

HISO - Health Information Standards Organisation,

Still an acronym despite it's different meaning on this forum

ohhh, you're being pedantic f***er again. Still you seem to be very good at it.
GTG? Thank you. He didn't say HISO, he said HiSo. One's an acronym, one's a contraction.

And I'm being 'a' pedantic f***er...

Webster's dictionary gives radar as an example of an acronym. It says an acronym is a word made from the initial letters or parts of a series of words. Another definitiion I've seen is - a pronounceable word formed from the initial letter or letters of the constituent words. HiSo is an acronym. Is it spelled HISO, HiSo or hiso? It's been spelled all three ways on BTF.

OK, I found it on the Internet, but I checked it and it's right...

From the concise OED: ''acronym, n. a word, usu. pronounced as such, formed from the initial letters of other words (e.g. Ernie, laser, Nato). [Greek akron ‘end’ + onuma = onoma ‘name’]

You can keep *your* Merriam-Webster!'' (NB That last bit's part of the quote.)

PS ERNIE=Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment, LASER=Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, NATO=North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
PPS HISO is an acronym (Health Information Standards Organisation, apparently). HiSo isn't. It's a contraction of 'High Society'. I know it's boring and dull, but the words 'contraction', 'abbreviation' and 'acronym' mean different things.

According to the four sources below, radar is an acronym. Since radar is an acronym, HiSo is an acronym.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations formed from the initial letter or letters of words, such as NATO and XHTML, and are pronounced in a way that is distinct from the full pronunciation of what the letters stand for.

Of the two words, acronym is the much more frequently used and known, and many speakers and writers refer to all abbreviations formed from initial letters as acronyms. However, many others differentiate between acronyms and initialisms. An acronym is a pronounceable word formed from the initial letter or letters of the constituent words, such as NATO. An initialism is an abbreviation pronounced as the names of the individual letters, and is formed only from the initial letter of constituent words, such as TLA. This distinction is supported by many dictionary definitions, but not by all.

Examples
pronounced as a word, containing only initial letters:
NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
laser: light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation
scuba: self-contained underwater breathing apparatus
pronounced as a word, containing non-initial letters:
Interpol: International Criminal Police Organization
Gestapo: Geheime Staatspolizei ("secret state police")
radar: radio detection and ranging
CONMEBOL: Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (South American Football Confederation)

Trivia
The longest acronym, according to the 1965 edition of Acronyms, Initialisms and Abbreviations Dictionary, is ADCOMSUBORDCOMPHIBSPAC, a United States Navy term that stands for "Administrative Command, Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet Subordinate Command."
