Had the same experiences as Balls on this....nahm blao gets me a blank look....nahm bow ( bow as in bow-wow the barking dog) gets me the water.
When you ask for a bottle of "nam yen" then you are asking for cold water...one from the fridge...my wife only drinks unchilled water so its...."nahm bow kuat mai yen, khob khun khap" (liquid - water - bottle - not cold - thanks)
One glass of water in the restaurant?.."nahm bow neung gaaew" (liquid - water - one - glass) seems to get me the glass but I find the water will arrive still in a bottle anyway. Enjoy

the Nahm in Nahmbut is spelled differently and has a different tone
it mean NAME, as in Nahmsakoon (surname)
and yes, there pleny of compound words with Nahm (water) in them
Nahmngern = blue
Nahmkaang = ice
and Nahmdtahn = sugar
