If you're just starting out and serious about progressing beyond Thai Bar Girl Language 101, try schools like Union or Union copycats, AAA, Unity, TLA, etc... Speaking is taught in the first two levels then reading and writing in levels 3&4. It can get intensive and challenging, especially in levels 3&4.
I've heard both positive and negative comments about AUA. Never studied there. As a beginner, who the hell wants to just sit and listen for hundreds of hours. I think this method is more effective for young kids because their minds soak up things fast.
As far as private lessons go, I'd hold off until your Thai improves a bit and you know exactly what you want to learn or improve on.

Thanks for the generous feedback.
I took a test lesson at AUA & was on my way to sign up for 30 hours, but something got in the way & instead I ended up with indeed TLA where I now have attended the 2 first days of 4 daily intensive hours (5o natii).
Damn I mis AUA I can tell you that as my throat & cheast is killing me trying to pronounce those weird sounds & tones etc that we're forced to repeat over & over again!!
Ohh & we're only at some 11 consonants & 12 vowels by now!!!
Group classes are very good though only 1-5 students (ours is 3 pretty much perfect) & 80hours is only 6700bt including course material (1 level)

Avoid AUA/Rachadamri.
Very political, lousy teachers, and many students learn next to nothing.
Grounds and building look nice, but quality there is awful.
