Both of the words (at the end of a sentence) have the same meaning and are mostly followed by a confirmation.
The difference between 'ru' and 'mai' is that 'ru' can be used as a standalone while 'mai' can't.

Agreed of course, that is another difference besides levels of politeness when used as a question tag.
But we also should point out (for those members who don't read Thai) that the 'mai' question word used as a question tag
'Gin biya yut mai?' (Do/did/will you eat (drink) a lot of beer?)
is not the same 'mai' which is can be used as a stand alone negation, such as,
'Gin biya yut mai?'
'mai'
Though again, this form though in certain situations quite acceptable would not be as formal or perhaps appreciated in other situations as a more extended answer (extended with either polite words, softeners (mai, lawg), fuller sentence (mai ow, mai dai gin) etc)

Most times I see "Sabai dee mai", sometimes (less frequently) I see "Sabai dee rheuh". What's the difference between ending a question with mai and rheuh
