Yurune: I've actually seen almost exactly that; A Thai makes an innocuous comment about a Falang and the Falang gets upset because he assumes it was a negative comment -- even thought the only word they recognized was "falang". Turist: Khap and Kha have NOTHING to do with it. I've noticed you reffering to the members of this board as "Khraps"; I think you are under the impression that it translates as "man/men"? That is not correct.

hmm, Your right when you say that I use the word "khrab" meaning "man". I am from Denmark and we have a word for this sort of thing! but I really don't know how to translate it but ofcause I can explain it, -or try! When I use Krab I know it is wrong but as a form of slang, in lack of a better english word (it also bring another meaning) (Directly translatet form Danish it is called "brought-on-meaning"). I could keep on explaining to cover my own ase but I hope you understand what I am trying to say! - and if not, I am probably laying!! (the word "laying" I am trying to spell means when U don't "talk truely"

My primitive language skill so far knows about the "short endings", the ending with Krab, and the q being a b ( or is that right?) and now you says that "s" is substituted with "L", Does that always count??

Either will be understood I am prettty sure. The Thai language has a lot of dialects which means different words for different things. Dont worry about it. There is also the fact that a lot of poorly educated Thai's cannot pronounce R's Hence calling me Galeg Dont worry toomuch about the language just learn soem basics and that will go a long way. To learn more would take a LOT of time and energy. Chok dee krap (good luck)

Turist, I think you are a little bit lost now. The khrap and kha and this has nothing to do with what you are mentioning. Get a dictionary and you will see, as for example: Male form: Sawasdee khrap Sabaii dii mai khrap Kun tschüü alai khrap Female form instead of khrap the word kha is used In the Thai spoken language you can, as the other members stated leave out an r and pronouce it as l.

That's an excellent choice of phrases to learn. I'll leave it to someone else to explain about how important pronunciation is -- I don't want to discourage you.

Turist; Glad to see you've taken the bull by the horns, in regards to learning some thai. I truly believe you'll do well on your trip. Everybody is saying it, but seems that it's not all being said. What I mean is, khap & kha, dose'nt mean man or woman, it's just that in spoken thai khap is only used by thae man, and kha by the woman. If you're adressing a thai with hello /goodbye you'll say sawadee khap, if it's a thai male he'll say the same back to you. If it's a women she'll reply sawadee kha. (except for what Bandit said) Now fallang I was told by my reg. that they only use it to identify euopean American, to put it bluntly western white other than asian. Middle eastern deffinately has another identifing word for them being a foreigner, and the same with african and or african american. Unfortunately I cant remember the words that they use as I was'nt really able to take my eyes off her big hooters lol!!! However she did tell that to me and maby someone can give the other words up... I do agree with Mr. Joe about what you're starting to learn, very good choices. Lastly, so you know, the thais you inneract with and sapeek thai with will be more impressed that you botherd learning some thai than how you pronounce it. They understand that you did'nt mean to call them a dick head and that at least you're trying lol !!!

Getting back to the original post, I have seen "falang" used for any caucasian foreigner, the ones that dont fit into that category are called by what race they really are (Kon-India, Kon Yi-poon, Kon-Singapore, etc). I don't see it used in a derogatory manner (I am Asian, so that is my humble opinion) and when I use it in Thailand to refer to caucasians, it certainly isn't done so in a derogatory way. I live in Hawaii and instead of "falang", they use the word "haole" for caucasian-like people, and it is used in the same manner as in Thailand. However, if you are called a "Stupid haole" or a "Fu#king haole", then those will be fighting words. I would venture the same applies in Thai...
