Like one of the previous posters, I would like to recommend Somchart Language school. I have only good experiences with them and have managed to learn the Thai language quit well. The owner is friendly and professional, like all the teachers that work there and the school is good value for your money. Their website is http://www.geocities.com/thai_language_school/ What poster thai3 said is not true. In the years I've studied there, the period in which the 40 hours must be used has always been 1 year, which should be plenty of time for 20 2-hour lessons.

HS, You posted back in March that you were going to attend the Unity Language School (the one in the Times Square building?) Did you take the class yet? If so, which module(s)? Is Thai spoken exclusively in class? Which one concentrates on conversations? I'd like to hear your review. Thanks.

Sputnik, I actually had intended to study at Union Language School, in Surawong, but Unity is comprised of former Union teachers, and should be equivalent. I'm sorry I can't review either, since I haven't been in country for the past year. I can tell you, however, that Union is intensive, 4 hours a day, and emphasizes reading and writing early on, in contrast with AUA. Many business people swear by Union. At 6000 baht/month (80+ hours), it is quite reasonable, I think. Let us know what you find out... haam sup

HS, Yes, you did say Union - not Unity. I'm dyslexic. I'll likely take a class at Unity this November, but in case class is full I need a backup plan. I want to get scheduling information for Union. Does anyone know when class begins this November? Does Union even have a website? I did a Google search and found a Japanese website with information on Thai language schools - only if I could read Japanese. All I know is a few curse words. I tried emailing them, but haven't received a response yet. Maybe I have the wrong email - union_lang@yahoo.com? Any help would be appreciated.

sputnik, I have never seen a website for Union, and the email address you gave is listed on at least one search result. My experience is that many Thai businesses don't check email often, and don't follow through. Better to call or write them: Union Language Schoool CCT Building 109 Surawong Road, Bangkok tel (02) 252 8170 They are right behind Patpong I, on Surawong in a big modern highrise (the CCT building). You could spit on the Kangaroo Bar (or whatever) from there. When you get the info, please post it for the others who may also be interested. cheers, haam sup

I am studying at Unity after having studied at 2 other schools. Highly recommend it or Union (which I assume to be the same). I have the schedules for both and will post them shortly. If I remember correctly modules at the two schools started within days of each other.

The email address for Union was correct after all. It took a week for them to respond to my email. Union offers 6 modules including elective modules and a Pathon 6 preparation course. Each module lasts 80 hours. Classes are from 8:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. daily Monday through Friday. Each module lasts 4 weeks plus an additional 1 or 2 days depending on how many holidays fall within the period. The price is 6,000B and is nonrefundable. Their schedule is as follows: November 17 - December 16 January 5 - January 30 February 2 - February 27 March 1 - March 29 March 30 - April 30 May 17 - June 14 June 16 - July 13 Jully 15 - August 16 August 18 - September 14 September 16 - October 13 October 19 - November 16 November 18 - December 17 Unity has the same November 2003 schedule as Union. (The schedule on Unity's website is not up to date.) Classes are also from 0800-1200 hrs at 6,000B. They also offers afternoon classes from 1300 - 1600 hrs at 5,000B. Hope this helps. Nikko, I plan to attend Unity in November. The program appears to be the same or similar to that of Union's. Which module are you taking now and what exactly is being taught? I have basic reading and writing skills and know the tone rules so I'm hoping to jump into either module 2 or 3. Maybe I'll run into you next month.

update on thai language schools: thong lor: at thong lor bts sky train station. makes a friendly impresion. the facilities are old and simple, nothing fancy. they do private classes, 3 hours a day. 30 hours cost 8700 baht. they have teaching material and made a friendly impresion. pro language school: at times square building, sukhumvit soi 12-14. the also teach english and japanese. nice facilities and in a upmarket location. 20 private hours cost 9000 baht. they also have group courses. unity thai language school: at times square building, sukhumvit soi 12-14. nice facilities, upmarket location. they do group courses starting once a month. they presented me a detailed, worked-out program that made a good impression. 80 hours (4 hours a day) cost 6000 baht. 60 hours (3 hours a day) cost 5000 bath.probably a good choice for someone who wants to study in a group. somchart language school: at sukhumvit soi 18. simple facilities, nothing fancy. they do mostly private lessons, but they also have group lessons. private lessons: 20 hours, 1 hr a day, 5800 baht 80 hours, 4 hrs a day, 11600 baht in the evening the classes are slightly more expensive. impression of somchart language school: i have chosen somchart, because they made a friendly impresion and had comprehensive materials. they are also cheaper than the other ones. i now study there for 2 weeks (4 hours a day) and i like it alot. the teachers ( theres is actually a cute one ) are alot of fun and at the same time demanding (study wise). i can so far only recommend them. 4 hours a day of school (incl. 1 hour of writing) requires at least the same amount of time studying at home, if one wants to memorize everything. for further questions, please feel free to pm me. gringo loco
