Like Kiyauw.....

But the 'egotistical "ass pirate"' probably has a better solution....

BTW, Sor-A-Dong, as a member of Proud Speakers of Gibberish Thai may I invite you to one of our meetings and learn a few things from you. Maybe we can have a conversation about the pleasures of Thai without your loyal sidekick (The Dictionary) near you....

khiauw as in 'chew' is spelled with a khoo-khwaai (a low consonant) and has the "mai thoo" tone mark, so it's a high tone, not a rising tone. Khiauw with a rising tone is the color green.

Have I done enough to earn my sore-a-dong badge?

Could be... as said I don't use dictionaries.

So in that sense, Sor-A-Dong would certainly give you a badge...

Dr. maybe it was you who didn't get it.... maybe cuz while you perhaps tried to make a point in one area, you failed to read my post for what it added, but instead you thought I was flatly trying to shoot you down. Don't get so defensive. It was not about arguing with what YOU said. I was making a point in that literal translations sometimes don't help much.

However yes, you do have a point the other way around in that knowing some Thai helps understand why some Thais speak English the way they do. An example that would support your point is the way Thais say in English "big milk" when trying to say that a woman has big breasts. They are translating literally. Of course unless you know some Thai at first you may not have some clue what the guy is trying to tell you.

When I wrote my earlier post in this thread saying that it's a high tone word, I didn't use a dictionary. I think it's quite easy to hear that it's a high tone word, not a rising tone word.

For my second post, I used a dictionary to help provide the reason why indeed it is a high tone word.

It most definitely sounds "high" when spoken, although most female Thai speakers let the word "trail off" a bit at the end... stretching the word as it were... to add emphasis, and this "falling off" resembles a falling tone. An example of why it's handy to have a dictionary.
