For those on a short term, you could do well to print out this ebook, and get the BG to teach you how to say those words. http://bkk-tonite.com/ebook/BKK_ebook_lang.pdf You could have lots of fun with it too! "Do you seriously think that most of us have "level of education" as a prime criteria when choosing our BGs ?" Since communication is not an issue, I just look for the big tits. If it was for me, then I'd make sure, I can communicate with her first, and then check out the other goodies.

Quote: from Monk on 5:10 pm on Aug. 13, 2003 When you're translating between two languages of very different roots and origins, finding exact 1 to 1 matches, especially for concepts, is quite hard. There are cultural concepts that i find quite difficult to translate without having resort to anecdotes or other explainers. For example, i can't think of an english phrase for "chai noi" (any ideas? I was thinking sensitive). It literally means little heart, but that would not be an accurate translation.
Small-minded, touchy or sensitive.

Quote: from Arramsey on 3:57 pm on Aug. 13, 2003 Vancouver Jay , What irks you so much ? Is it my use of the word "primitive" in describing the Thai language ? Then my apologies - maybe I should have used the word "basic" or "non-intricate" .
If you feel the need to apologize, apologize to the Thais, not to me.

Perhaps the more seasoned thai speakers can confirm or correct this but here's a hilarious take on the word 'darling' as used by the TGs. A lot of guys think the girls are calling them darling but what they are really saying is 'daakhling' which, hold your breath, really means 'monkey's ass'. Isn't that sweet?

yup.... daak is Isaan for ass. In Thai it would be "toot" (low tone) or "kohn" (falling tone). you could say... "tii daak" (sounds almost like tiilac) ... which means "beat the ass".

Even better is "daak ling", which sounds like "darling", but, of course, means "monkey's ass". One of the Hair Design girls and I used to trade these frequently, and laugh our asses off. VJ, Marco and Monk (and BK), have it nailed: Thai IS word poor, but monosyllabic, and the subtlety is derived from the arrangement of words, rather than a plethora of synonyms. And those that think that 'speak' and 'talk' and 'say' and 'converse' are all the same word in Thai ('poot'), simply do not know ANYTHING about the language. Thai literature, although I am really no judge, since my reading skills are infantile, is said to be pretty sophisticated. Of course it wouldn't be as well known as the literature in other, less difficult languages. I know that I will NEVER approach the mastery of Thai that I would like. But I will never quit learning, either. Try hanging with some EDUCATED Thais, and then decide. After you've spent a couple of years learning the language in a FORMAL setting, that is... haam sup

Haam Sup , All that you say is perfectly true if this Thread was about the Thai language . However this Thread was about " understanding and being understood by Thai BGs " and was meant NOT for the Thai language experts BUT for those short time visitors to Thailand who know little or no Thai , who would be by and large interacting with BGs (for the most part not highly educated )and who do not have enough time to "hang out with educated Thais " OR to "spend a couple of years learning the language in a formal setting ".

Then you should have 'eschewed', as Mr. Pink would have said, the editorializing about the 'primitiveness' of the Thai language. So, yes, guys who attempt to communicate with BGs in English OR pidgeon Thai, will have trouble getting their points across... What else? haam sup

Haam Sup , Why would I feel insulted ? You don't know me & I don't know you so ( although we may disagree in various discussions ) there is no basis for us to dislike each other as long as we stick to the discussion and don't get personal .
