You know, considering the good Dr. has no problems getting himself understood in Thai, that his translation services have rightfully earned him the title 'The Pimp', and that Minder's Thai wife confirms the translation of 'selfish', and that finally BK's dictionary entry cements it -- I am amazed at how much flayling Sorapong is doing over a simple definition, which seems to have been confirmed from multiple independent sources.
It means 'selfish' -- as the Dr. pointed out. Case closed.

Of course, I didn't - which is why I found the answers and explanations give education and informative. I now know how to say 'selfish', which is cool.

I have done it several times and ended looking foolish instead of impressive.
My most recent example of falling into this trap was learning the phrase "fohn (R) dtohk (L) mai (F) thuaa (F) faa (H) which is literally "It can't rain everywhere at once"
The original website I used compared this to the English saying "Every cloud has a silver lining" using the connotation that "rain" is a bad thing (into every life a little rain must fall, save money for a rainy day etc)
Wrong! As you would know it's actually more like something you mutter to yourself in Thai when you are the one who misses out - everyone else gets, say, a pay rise and for no apparent reason, you don't. A better translation would be "Life is not fair".
Or as my Thai sister-in-law impressed me by summing it up in her limited English:.
The English phrase is a positive one, the Thai phrase is a negative one.
You see, in Thai, rain is a good thing - makes the crops grow etc.
The more Thai I learn, the more I realize how little I really know.....Enjoy

It has long since been clear that the “applicable” meaning of the term “hen geh’ tua” is “selfish”, even though it literally means “prone to excuse-making” more than it might connote someone who, say, hogs two parking places with his Honda Civic, or won’t share his french fries with his friends.
The issues I’ve been arguing, as usual, are fatheaded Dr Love’s ignorance of the language, his refusal to use a dictionary to find out that he’s wrong, and in this particular instance, his ongoing and idiotic persistence that
1] the “tua” in this compound word is same as the word for “body” when in fact it is the word for “example” or “instance”. Yes, it is spelled the same way, just as (in the example I provided weeks ago) “fly” (as in “fly a kite”) and “fly” (as in the David Cronenberg film) are spelled the same way but don’t share the same meaning -- i.e., they are functionally different words,
and
2] that the word “geh” in the term “hen geh’ tua” is actually the word “kae”, as in “only this” or “just this” -- e.g., the “kae” in the term every TG uses to sign off of a short phone call: “kae ni, na?” -- “only that, ok?”, or “that was all I was calling about, ok?”
It is not. If the term really was “hen kae tua”, then DrL might be vaguely right in translating it as “sees only self [body]” -- but “kae” is not the word in that term, and the Dorkter is wrong.
The word is not “kae” (only), but “geh’” (open/solve).
As for BK being definitive, not really, since the definition he came up with provides an unsatisfactory and misleading transliteration of the term “geh” (open/solve) that will only bolster the ignorance of cretins like DrL.
Please, anyone with lingering doubts, simply go offline, get an actual Thai dictionary of some quality, and look up the term “geh tua” -- it means “solve a situation” with an excuse; examine the “geh” part of that compound word and you will see that it is the “geh” meaning open or solve, as I have been saying all along.
p.s. Doc, still waiting for your retry on that language quiz I gave you…

Sorapong - as someone who only knows you from your drive-by spoutings, allow me to please welcome you, no, BEG YOU, to please shut the f*** up.
a) no one cares about you micro-analyzing every single Thai sentence, word, or idiom.
b) most of the time (from UTFSE), your 'advice' or 'wisdom' is completely useless to the question asked.
The answer that was requested and required was 'selfish'. BK provided it. His advice, as well as the corroboration by Minder's wife (I'd figure a Thai native speaker would know) are the definitive answer.
Your contributions to this thread are really only so much noise. Go away.

No reference to minders wife at all, but I actually disagree with this sentance. Many many Thai's are very poorly educated in their own language, the rules of grammar, often even the pronunciation (which of course is also distorted by regional accents), the correct meanings of words.
I mean there are plenty of people in the UK for example who struggle to use their own language proficiently, so why would the thai's be any different, this "Oh, I asked a Thai" answer to everything is frankly often nonsense.
I wear a T shirt which has Thai writing on it. I am not going to explain what it is, but it is a relatively simple phrase, but written in very proper Thai. Thai's read it and have to ask me to explain what it says. A statistic I heard several years ago and unfortunately cannot produce the source now, but it was in the BKK Post was that well over half of the Thai population only understand around 30% of the words in their own language. I would hazard a guess that a large number of the sources that people from this board run to (a bar girl) sit in that bracket.
So I tried, in an office to get people to break down 'hen gae tua' It wasn't a great success and promoted some debate amongst degree holding Thai's.
I would also add to this that we as 'students' of Thailand know more about this country than a large proportion of Thai's...the history, the infrastructure etc, just as a group of American tourists with a Dorling Kindersly guide book know more about London than I do.
Quite frankly, the average Thai is hardly the font of all knowledge.
For the record, I generally tend to find sorapong's breakdowns accurate, but on this one, I've given up, it's always meant selfish to me....and that's good enough.
Again for the record, this post is not directed at minder and his wife, I know nothing about them.

No offence taken.
Tend to agree, if you ask two Thais for the correct tone on a particular word they will often disagree. Further breaking words down to origins will lead to a debate - my point was that the phrase was immediately identified as meaning "selfish" by a native speaker - that's all. And for me that is enough, at this stage.
Minder's wife
1. University Educated
2. Naturally intelligent
3. Recognized the phrase over the phone and broke it down as previously posted - cut her some slack she was after all having to explain it to an imbecile and perhaps cut corners.
4. Married beneath herself but doesn't realize it yet.
