tad, in Thai?

The four Thai Daw consonants, when used at end of a phrase are always read as Taw, so this would have to be tat. The proper pronounciation depends on which consonants, and which vowel (sala) a, and of course the tone the syllable carries...

I just checked. It's spelled sala ee, Taw tao, Daw dek, and it is a rude word, whereas koon jeh is polite (or as polite as cliteris gets.)  The pronounciation is flat, and the sala ee is rather like ae or eh. So, taet, or teht, represents the actual sound, while tad is a pretty poor transliteration (sorry, dictionary) because while it accurately conveys he spelling of the consonants, it misleads as to the vowel, and does not help with the proper enunciation of the final vowel as t rather than d sound.

By the way a polite circumlocution for vagina is tao tong (gold turtle), and a somewhat less polite word for pussy is pi (short vowel) -- not pii (ghost) or pii (elder (brother, sister, senior in friendship or work etc.) which differ in legth of vowel and in tone. Hee is course is RUDE (like c*** instead of vagina or pussy).

CJ, is there a standard in Thai language transliteration (without the use of special characters) that everyone is using. Everyone other book I have seen seems to have their own style.

When you write sala "ee"... most would read it as a long "i" such as "tee". It sounds more like 'air'. I will test out that koon jeh word with my gf. She calls it met (as in seed).

Yep, I should not have used "d" in 'tad' as Thai language doesn't have the same "d" ending as in English, 't' is correct, my mistake, I was transcibing the 'dor dek'.

just being anal and trying to correct some possible mispronunciations (however, coming from a farang, i don't think they'd mind much)

The Thais call someone who is a dumb guy, among other possibilities, a water buffalo (Ai kwai) or a water buffalo's head (Ai kaban kwai), in either case the meaning is: stupid, uneducated, beast of burden. As mentioned earlier, kaban is an animal head; hua is specifically and only a human head (a human or animal skull is a galoke)

kraban (not kaban) and hua can be used interchangably between human and animal. the term "hua kraban" is also normal.

Pen ya on = idiot, retard

panya = wit, intelligence
on = soft

will find out about seubeu and let you know what I can dig up.

seu = innocent
beu = mm..not sure how to translate. not very sharp, i think?

so it's more like a name for a naivete, not much of an insult.

Ai kaban kwae = dickhead and added insult of nonhuman

i don't think anyone actually says that phrase. it makes sense, but not practical as it sounds too refined and long with "kraban".

The three above are in descending order of severity, but using any of them CAN get you dragged to a police station and fined on the spot.

speaking from experience? i haven't heard of such fines, but i haven't really used such terms in a public banter either

CJ,

Had a "Thai language" seminar with my TG not too long ago about the word "clitoris." She pronounced it, "taet," the way you are suggesting (correcting my original, more guttoral squacking). She was wondering, "why you learn?"

Maybe I try the more polite form, and tell her I think her "koon jeh" rides gallantly atop the "tao tong." Ha!

I finally thought of a perfect example for how to pronounce tad (taet, teht) properly.

Tweetie Bird: "I tawt I Taw a Puddy......TEHT!!

I DID! I DID TAW A PUDDY TAET!!"

That's exactly like the Thai work for clit counds.
