Quote: from haam sup on 12:20 pm on Aug. 14, 2003 ------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- So, yes, guys who attempt to communicate with BGs in English OR pidgeon Thai, will have trouble getting their points across... What else? haam sup
Haam Sup , I am guessing that the large majority of guys on this Forum fit the description you have given above . With this in mind and also the fact that there have been numerous threads about misunderstanding BGs , I thought it would be helpful to show how many misunderstandings could arise . Hence the Thread .

There are many languages that have a classical form that, while not in use in day to day life, is still understood and appreciated by most native speakers. For example, my arab friends tell me that the Iraqi Information Minister is not as comic a figure as the western translations of his speeches makes him out to be. His speeches are in a classical, poetic like, form similar to the koran (or so i'm told). Thai is the same way, there are schools were people, especially girls, are taught to speak in a very formal, very proper way. There's even a famous katoey named Willie who teaches many actors/actresses/public speakers on how to speak. To Thais, this kind of proper speaking is an appreciated talent. But while most people can not do it justice, the average lay person can understand what there saying. Its like in the west, Shakespeare is a very poetic and beautiful form, though the vast majority couldn't construct such sentences (or understand them for that matter). My understanding is that this more formal thai is more about proper pronunciation. Listen to the news sometime or watch one of the buddhist monks teaching on TV and see how much more indepth the thai language can be. As for thai literature, my reading sucks. But I understand that some of the thai literature is quite poetic.

So i was thinking of more colorful thai examples maybe BK can contribute. Most of the ones that i can think of are food related. For example: Instead of calling grilled beef, neua yang you can call it seua long or crying tiger named for the flames the dripping fat creates on the grill.

I think it is safe to say that most BG's, Taxi Drivers and most of the other service workers we meet are from the NE provinces, and most of them speak their native Issan Dialect. Also most of them attended school for the minimum 6 years, and maybe where not the best of students. Thai for them is a second language which they learned in school and never use unless necessary. Expecting them to learn English using Thai as the intermediate is going to be difficult. If indepth meaningful conversation is your goal Issan is the language for you to learn. Then someone once said "even if the BG spoke perfect English she still would have nothing to say".

I think that if you always keep in mind Thai BG's just want money to 1) send some back to what is usually Isaan and 2) go out drinking with their friends before they sleep all day, then you can make them happy with any language. Apart from the mercenary nature they are basically just very immature for their age...except when it comes to getting money from farang. Not too hard to understand. How much sophostication can you expect from someone who usually wears jeans that are too long and 6" platform shoes anyway? (Sorry to generalize...know there are many good hearted ones out there and they have no choice and it is not easy for them etc. etc.)

Quote: from Arramsey on 10:20 am on Aug. 11, 2003 -And herein lies the problem . The Thai language ( in my opinion ) is very primitive as compared not only to English but also as compared to most languages of the developed or developing world . What I mean by this is that the Thai language is very basic so much so that if one tried to compile a Thai Thesaurus I doubt that one would get beyond 10 or 12 pages
The bottom line is , two people unable to communicate , easily come to the wrong conclusions. Thai has 5 tones for each word, as some people will know. Try reading Heart talk by CG Moore, they have a more poetic language than you could imagine. Another incorrect assumption is that people in Isaan speak laos as in laotian. They speak Thai with certain references to the Laotian language. An Issan Thai would not be able to comprehend what a Laotian was saying, perhaps the odd word. Also the script is different. I realise the idea behind this thread was to make it easier to communicate with BG's, it's also good to have an insight to this language at times.

Have been to Laos before with my Isaan TGF and she had no problem conversing with the locals in pasa Lao. It took her a few hours to figure out the written words, but she picked this up pretty quickly by matching the spoken language to what she was reading on menus, signs, etc. Her main complaint is that her "brother and sister" in Laos don't smile enough. She speaks Lao, Isaan, and Thai, and at the time, had only 6 years of formal education in the Thai system. She told me not to learn Isaan, but learn Thai first, and she and I are using a combination of Thai and English to teach each other our "native" langauges. Not sure, maybe this makes us the expection, but it is helping me loads, and her English is much better now too. She uses a Thai/English dictionary, not a Lao-Isaan/English Dictionary. I know a few Isaan phrases, but there is little point in this right now, as BKK is not the place for me to use them. Maybe later, I'll get the time to be more conversant in Isaan. I am not an expert in any of the SE Asian languages by any means, really just starting, but I recall reading elsewhere, and hearing some of the (former) members of this forum state that early Thai written/spoken stuff is very poetic and moving, and much of it was written this way. I would be curious to know if other members of the board (or former members who may be lurking) can shed some light on this historical premise? I have also used Moore's Heart Talk to get a better understanding of Thai, and it gives me the feeling I am only scratching the surface of a very colorful and descriptive language. My TGF said to me the other day, when I was pointing out that she does more listening than talking, "teelakja, eeeeeef you learn pasa Thai, then you see I poot mahk like grandmama!" That gave me pause for concern ... - Balls
