Quite frankly, the average Thai is hardly the font of all knowledge.

I think 'all' should be replaced with 'any'.

Over time I find less and less info provided by Thai's and more provided by resident expats. Thai's seem to live in their own small worlds and do not explore too much out of their sphere.

Many Thai's cannot read or write especially older parents and relatives up country.

Last week a TBG suggested a good club to go to, MOS on Soi 12...Uh that has been closed for 2 years. I guess she does not get out often.

During the past month I have had 6 taxi drivers not know how to get on the expressway even though I boarded the taxi at the Landmark hotel about 200 yards from the expressway.

I just keep on repeating the OTOP slogan
"The miracle of Thai wisdom"

No offence taken.

Tend to agree, if you ask two Thais for the correct tone on a particular word they will often disagree. Further breaking words down to origins will lead to a debate - my point was that the phrase was immediately identified as meaning "selfish" by a native speaker - that's all. And for me that is enough, at this stage.

Minder's wife
1. University Educated
2. Naturally intelligent
3. Recognized the phrase over the phone and broke it down as previously posted - cut her some slack she was after all having to explain it to an imbecile and perhaps cut corners.
4. Married beneath herself but doesn't realize it yet.
Enjoy.

I like item #4 hope she never does.

And ask 10 Thai's on how to say something and you get ten different answers. I have given up learning any more Thai and I am finding it less and less important. It seems more and more Thai's are learning English. I can count money, order food, find the shitter and tell the taxi driver how to drive in Thai, I find little need for much more as f*** seems to be universally understood.

TU...the shitter??I still have no need for that particular room....

I better go read the Akane Fashion thread....

edit

Reserving judgement on this thread, as I didn't know the actual breakdown myself, I asked the one Thai who I do consider the font of all knowledge on Thai, particularly as their English is so good they can actually explain themselves properly.

She basically gave an answer that agreed with one poster, and actaully added a bit more that explained the missing link.

So.... I now know who was correct....

I think Mr. Soradong depends too much on his dictionary and doesn't leave him any imagination.

Perhaps a good example is his translation of his 'challenge'....

Do you have an example?
Please give me an example.

Doesn't have that the same meaning in English? Doesn't it result in a person giving an example (if available) ? It illustrates the fact that you're short sighted.

About 'hen geh tua', ask ten randomly chosen Thais (who speak English) and ten will translate it into 'selfish'.
And so does the Se-Ed Modern Dictionary. But again, translations in dictionaries are subject to the author and do not mean the definite solution.

Been reading this with interest and based on my experiences with foreign languages you cannot take the litteral translation 100% of the time. In many cases you must consider the 'Vox Populi' effect and take the colloquial meaning of the phrase into account.

The best example of this is to walk the streets of Tokyo and see all of the locally produced English language t-shirts the Japanese are wearing, some of them are hilarious...

BK did not provide the correct translation of this term; Abrak did, back on page 1 -- and I agreed, and have restated that fact many times since. The fact that "hen geh' tua" means "selfish" has been painfully evident ever since...except, I suppose, to those can't read. Of those pathetic souls, there are unfortunately far too many here.

The discussion then shifted to the translation of the term "geh' tua", and/or the word "geh' ", a fact that many here continue to be unable to compute.

And leave it to Yerkyl to chime in with his usual sub-moronic attempt at... something. Anyone wishing to see what I actually admitted to being wrong about -- which was neither the translation of the term "hen geh' tua" nor the word "geh' " -- need only read back through this thread. Yerkyl, wouldn't your time be better frittered away dreaming up some more of those Tentmouse Forum-like sex fantasies of yours?

And Dr Dipshit is still wrong -- at neither the three-word phrase level, or the word-by-word level, does this term mean "sees only self."

p.s. The way one asks for an example in Thai is "Kor yok tua yaang noi, krap". Any one who speaks Thai would know this -- as they would the middle word of the three word term, Hen Geh Tua.
