FWIW - Mamasan to most BGs is simply the word for their female manager - that it was a carry-over to Thailand from Vietnam courtesy of US troops during that incursion seems unknown to them - not surprising given their average age - the Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as it is to our own kids.
mae (the word for mother in Thai) is pronounced "mare" like the horse but soft on the "r" that is if you speak English anything like the English do. Enjoy.

Vietnamese word for mother is same word ( ME. with a pronunciation mark under the E ),,, one of quite a few words I have found same in Thai as in Vietnamese ( or almost exactly the same).

I find lots of girls use/understand 'mama' and 'papa' or even 'mama-papa' for mother and father too. As in: "Baby stay mama-papa, Korat."

Actually in VN mamasan say Ma' Mi`, ME is Mommy.

mama-san--easily deduced from the SAN part--is from japanese! I would imagine it started with the psot-WW II US GIs who spewed all over japan, passed down to their "brothers" in the korean war (who also coined the word "gook"), then passed down to the grunts in vietnam, who brought it via their LOS R & R visits to thailand.
interesting aside on "gook": when koreans would meet an american, they would say "ah, you're american", which in korean--not that different from chinese--is "mii kook" (in chinese, "mii kwok" or "mii kok"). the always IQ-challenged ameriKKKans heard this as "me gook" ("I am a gook" when really what the koreans were saying was, "ah, so you're from mii kook") and thus the epithet was born...and passed on to the dumb f*** americans' derogatory slang for vietnamese...

I tend to share the belief that "gook" was slang from the Korean war.
However the origin of the word "Gook" is disputed, some suggest is came from farther back and was from the Filipino uprising of 1899. The American soldiers are said to have referred to the natives as "gugus," playing off a Tagalog word meaning "tutelary spirit."

1. n. [1920s+] (orig. US military.) a derogatory term for foreigners, especially south-east Asians, e.g. (in chronological order of use) Filipinos, Japanese, Koreans, and Vietnamese.
Would agree that "mama-san" has its origins in Japan and passed into US army slang at the end of WW2. Enjoy.
