The last time I went to Thailand I went with a friend and I printed up some business cards with common Thai phrases to assist us with making small talk in LOS. I am currently working on a document and I have a very very rough template I am working on so that we all can benefit by being able to download this file and print it out before our travels or once we are there. I am sure there is a better way to publish this template I am working on but here is my first test. Take a look. top of business card http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dwpghfp_84dx79gvc5 flip side of business cards http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dwpghfp_9585p3grc4 I would suggest that anyone can color code the cards by highlighting the title with a highlighter for quick reference. I am trying to keep the cards categorized rather than having "hello" next to "do you take it in the pooper" I would suggest anyone using these to have them laminated before your travels too, this template should work for blank business card stock. Laminates are available too at any office store (use a towel and an iron to seal them). Feel free to add your comments to this. I will have two full pages of cards when finished so that anyone printing will be able to flip the page over and print on the back of the business cards too. This is not a finished version, just a quick test I made. I could use a good list of negotiation phrases too. I could also include some tips if I have room. Thanks, Doug

Good idea,,, need to ensure transliteration stays constant. Also a few errors,, but all up great thinking. Perhaps you should work out how many saying will fit, then get a vote on the most important 15, 20 whatever. Mel

Good one sj. I'll never forget telling a gal ( out-skirts of BKK ) in English that I would only ask for 2,000 ST because she nice. That cause mayhem,,,,translaters running from everywhere, huddles of discussion,, but they got it. She returned to say,, you very cheeky man,, we went out LT for 1,000 No I'm not a cheap-skate,, she got a 1,000 "performance" bonus,, not a tip. She earned it,,, must get back out to "Om Noi" next trip.

I think the best phrases to use in Thailand, assuming you know the basics of hello and thank you, are (spelled how they sound) : 1. My Ow Na Kop (I dont want thank you) 2. Kor toad na Kop (excuse me please) 3. Tao lai na Kop (how much?) but if you dont know numbers then you are f***ed with the responce.. 4. Ow E na kop (another one, drinks etc) 5. Tee nai hong nam (where is the bathroom) 6. tong by (go straight) 7. leo sai (turn left) 8. leo qua (turn right) 9. Khun bin quai (you are a buffalo..if you want a shank from a tuk tuk driver) but number 1 will do you right atl

What I felt the most needed changes were made and it is still in the building stages. I will reorder some of the items and I do not expect that people will keep all the cards with them at all times, but these can be useful in the way that you can carry a few of them depending on what you are up to. I made these to fit onto a standard sheet of business cards so that is why there are so many phrases listed. The ones with bold title bars are for adult content and not to be left lying around your house. I am also taking suggestions on what other things to add to these sheets. I will always leave some empty spaces for people to fill out their specific items that maybe most of us would not want on there. Thanks, Doug

I think it is a stupid idea. Maybe ok for the guy that has never been out of Montana or Idaho... but.. oh well, forget I said anything. You will look very smart trying to read Thai from a printed card. Better yet, why donīt you buy that book "Thai for lovers" or something like that it was named. There was a post years ago where it was mentioned. ATL, you will sound very gay using so many "na". I wonder who taught you to talk like that?

Hopefully by the time the flashcards are finished and the OP quizzes himself with them repeatedly, he won't need them anymore.
Quote: from atl on 4:13 am on June 1, 2008 4. Ow E na kop (another one, drinks etc)
Eek rather than E. Just E is a different word with an unfortunate meaning that could create misunderstandings.

Yes the whole point of the cards were to easily remember certain phrases. I read over them for an hour or so and then I was able to remember 90% of them without looking. I was posting it here so that it could help some of you as I found it helpful. I wasn't looking to get flamed for contributing to the site. Thank you for those who corrected the phrases so that it is more accurate. I'm arriving into BKK on Nov 5th and staying at the town lodge if anyone wants to meet for a drink. Thanks, Doug
