Has anyone ever heard a Thai girl call another Thai girl a "jeer"? They are both from the south. I have asked some friends in Bangkok, but they are unfamiliar with that word. Any thoughts? The girl that said the insult was from Surat Thani if that helps.

Single words without tone or vowel description - based on what we thought we heard - taken from Thai into our own brand of English (Oz, Pom, Yank, Kiwi, Euro) - too many variables makes for a very slim chance of getting it right even knowing the general context - in this case an insult.
"Geer/Here" (depending on the Thai's accent) can mean something unsavoury, unlucky - comes from upcountry slang name for those big goanna type lizards you see in the klongs. About a 1% chance its the same word you heard but its all I got.

even the gals in my office use it & it's become common
if you are really in a bitching match with someone & call them that however, it's fighting words
but it's common for someone to say, for instance if you were driving along and some asshole cuts in front of you because he thinks your lane is going a wee bit faster, you might say : Kup Rot HEEYA Arai !?!
what kind of f***in' driving is that ?

I mentioned to Mrs Shreddie that someone says if you want to talk bad in Thailand when you "yak yak" with them, then you can call them "Heeya". That someone told me it is liking calling them a lizard and you are saying they are very low down near your feet.
She smiled and agreed. Mrs Shreddie also warned me, "Don't go saying that to a Thai man or he will kick you".
So it looks like it is exactly the kind of insult that Minder, Seajohn & LY say it is.

I always have a laugh with my Thai friend...
If we are meeting and I get there before him, I will call him and say to him:
"I am here" ไอ้แอมเหี้ย
And he replies "I know you are"

In the U.S. we can say "whats going on nigger"?
Or we can say "you're a nigger"
I guess the same thing.... one way is no problem and the other is an insult
And if you are a nigger, you can use it at will, no one cares about what a nigger has to say anyhow.
