OK, here is a basic Thai language question, which fits my basic Thai language capabilities.  What is "lor"?  I hear it a lot but can't decipher exactly what it means.   I hear it on such phrases as "Jing lor"? when I say something, or when a Thai calls me (within the same room) "Frank lor"?  I know its a question phrase, but how is it different from "Mai" or "Ruu"?  Also, while on the subject, when to use "mai" and when to use "ruu"? (I heard "mai" was for more opinion-like questions like "hue-mai").  Anyway, how is "lor" different from "lor(handsome)"?  OK, I think I have killed that question.  Please let me know.  Thanks.

BW,

I think it is an ending particle to a rhetoric question. I can't seem to find it in the dictionary though.

Ruu (Reu) has two functions, one works similar to Mai, but not exactly the same, and the other means, "or".

e.g. "Khun Mai Pai Ruu" (You are not going are you?)
"Khun Pai Mai" (Are you going?) Mai is never used in a negative question, that's the main difference.

In the "or" function, "Khun Chob Poo Ying Ruu Poo Chai"? (Do you like girls or guys?)

The "lor" that you hear has a rising tone, where as the "lor" for handsome is a low tone.

BK:  Thanks for the lesson, maybe "lor"? is a variation of ""Reu"?  OK, so "mai" is never used in a negative question (or question with assumption), in those ones you could use "reu" or "chai mai", chai mai?

What would you use if you want to ask "or" about 3 things?  I.E. Do you like water or coke or coffee?  (Chorp nam reu coke reu gaffe mai)  Does that make sense?

It was great to finally meet you the other night out.   Here's to many more!

Actually, there is a sort form for Ruu (in Thai spelling), which pronounces the same but with a slightly shorter sound.

Yeah, "mai" is used with positive questioning only.

I suppose you could just add in the ruu's for many "or"s or perhaps, "Khun chob coke, nam plao reu kaffe"

Yup to more night outs... "pai thiao poo ying!"

" lorh " basically means " yeah - is that so ? "     so you can get, "Jing lorh"   and answer,  " Jing lieu bow"  - i.e. Yes, that is really true.  -  Not really worth worrying about if you are not here too long, or having long converstaions, - but does help the flow of Thai language if you have a reasonable knowledge - much like  the regular addition of "nah'  or "nah kup" in a sentance - basically just being polite, sort of no meaning, except for being taken as " thank you for listening to me"  - a problem for most of us, myself included - we learn basic Thai, or as in my case, pick it up from everyday Thai people, so often we learn the slang, or lower class pronunciation - e.g. "Mai loo" or even worse, "Mai loo-c"  for I dont know - when if you are talking to an edecated Thai, they will use the correct "Mai sarp "   However as basically most of us are not here to chit chat with members of Thai Rak Thai,  its no big deal - or to impress your latest TG " Bow ben yung doc"  555  - even "lower" class Laos for  " mai pen rai "   never mind.

Agree with privateeye. It is a questionning word like "really?" or "is it?".

"Mai loo" is for those who can't pronounce their "roar reua (R) " correctly like Scots do.
