I have read all the posts that mensions "farang" and I still cannot figure out who they are!

I think it could be a word they use for me! The farang is someone who is not Thai, that is what I do know, but could someone please give me the right definision? (again, sry the spelling).

Farang technically refers to a European as it the original farangs were British Portuguese and French I believe. It does come from the word francais....fa-farng-set.....Now it also encompasses the USA, Canada etc....essentially any foreigner who they choose to apply it too......Some may refer to African Americans as farang...some may not....but essentially can be summed up as Non Asian foreigner

At the risk of being pedantic...

The word 'farang' is believed to come from the Persian 'farangg', although it is commonly mistaken as coming from the word for 'French', ' farangset'.

True enough:  "....but essentially can be summed up as Non Asian foreigner".

Here is a nice link:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/thai/language/section-5.html

Some folks take its use as disrespectful, especially when they are being referred to in the third person while present, but IMO this is Western cultural interpretation.  Thais often refer to their own as 'the fat one', or 'the one with the big nose', without disrespect, nicknames aside.

Hope this helps.

MrJoe
I've posted about this before and HS has covered it well so I'll just offer confirmation; there is debate about the origins of Falang/Farang. I happen to agree with the origin thaT HS cites but not all scholars do.

I also agree with Haam's comments about whether it is derogatory or not. I think he made an excellent point about the context (being referred to in the third person while present) tending to cause offense and a fine point about how Thais will do essentially the same thing about other Thais.

Actually I should have just said; Good post Haam Sup!

I agree with the third party stuff....At work we have a lot of passing farangs...they are all referred to as farang when they are there....but any farang who has been properly introduced by name is ALWAYS referrered to as Khun 'Name'...or in my case Phii or Na Yurune.

I mean how else should you refer to someone who's name you don't know...we all know the word he/she can be rather vague in Thai

LOL, never even occurred to me!  But if it was Thai, I'd change it to haam yai! A little false advertising never hurts

Actually, I'll spare you the gory details, except to say that it means 'horny guy' in Cantonese.  Damn waitresses in those dim sum shops...

(Thanks for the ack, MrJoe...if you keep encouraging me to be a good boy, it just might stick...)

'night all

So what you'r saying Yurune is that the word is not at all used for [de'sen'te'grate'íng] (I can't spell it) us but simply is a substitute for the word krab and kaa ?

Errmmm...not 100% sure what you are asking...but no...not a substitute for khrap or kha at all.......they use farang as a substitute for your name.....or anytime they want to say about foreigners...we will hear it a lot as we are foreigners.......and Thai's do tend to talk about you when you are there...it's their way....no worries.....

It's a substitute for he/him/she/her

I think a lot of farang get bothered by it because they hear the word farang and do not understand the rest that is said...so get defensive....

They may just be saying...'that farangs got a nice shirt on'...
