In the Bird song "Mah Tammai" they use the word dteyngmo (watermelon) several times (and also 'dteyng arai?'), and I can't figure out what they're getting at. I know the word can be used to mean "large breasts" or maybe even be applied to a woman with big tits. Is that the implication here, or is it a general term for fooling around, or what?
Even when I understand all the words (which is rare, especially in songs) I still can't figure out what the heck they're talking about. It's a conspiracy.

Firstly...no criticism here...but it's amazing to see the different use of spellings that people use when writing Thai in English. People hear the sounds differently...and I know the US Government / Military guide to Thai phonetics is very different to the British Linguaphone guide.
Okay that explained......I've quickly scanned the lyrics to the song...yes...several mentions of eating water melon...or actaully not wanting to eat it...He is refusing to eat the water melon brought as a peace offering....or offering....but he doesn't want to know.....the other reference....taang arai....(what kind of melon, taang being melon..there are others)...Unfortunately it does seem to be that boring...
I would be very surprised to see Bird...(Thai Rak Thai supporter and the man to record the new version of the National Anthem) singing about tits......(all my Thai colleagues says he's gay anyway)....Birds way too squeaky clean fot such lyrics.
As for you comment....me too....I've many songs I know the words....read the lyrics...and still cannot get what the actual phrase means......though I know I'd hardly ever put Thai lyricists into the ******* league. (Add you own favourite lyricist here...I can't decide...or get into an arguement that my choice is crap!!)

I would use a consistent transliteration if we could decide on one here. Do you want to suggest one?
I wouldn't think Bird would use "tits" exactly, but I could imagine him using various euphemisms (and I have little knowledge of which terms are crude and which are acceptable (one of the problems with learning Thai from bargirls).
Then perhaps the watermelon thing is some cultural reference I'm unaware of or it's just a metaphor.
Question 2: in Faan Ja (notice how I changed the transliteration again  ), do Kee Joo, Kee Dtua and Kee Hok actually mean anything in standard Thai? Are those from a dialect? I've looked them up and they don't compute.

As I said no criticism...some words are easy to do...and some you just sit there thinking...wtf???...LOL
For example...Red...oe Daeng...or Daang....oe Dang...or Deng
Using the transliteration I learned it would be Daang....The vowel in Thai used to make it....is 'a' twice. But of course that alters the sounds......to me...I prefer to see it written as Daeng.....
Now the word Water Melon is the same as Red bar Dor Dek being replaced by Tor Tao......so should be spelt the same......I used taang Mo......not Taeng Mo...why?.....cos it feels better....wierd huh
I've just arrived at work...luckily I brought the Bird CD with me...gonna run it past my best assistant and see if she agrees....but I think the use of water melons...is just because it fitted,. I mean if I if wanted to win someones heart a water melon would not be my weapon of choice.
I have a theory that even great lyricists write total shite sometimes because it fits...and the listener come up with what was really meant....and he sits in a chair and smiles counting the royalties......never of course explaining why he wrote it....LOL
Most bar girls terms for things are not really acceptable....I've slipped in the past....most embarrasing....

Just a bit more that might explain things.......
the girl he is singing with is named Jintara...which apparently is the name of one of the species of water melon...hence the song is a play on her name......
btw...if you are reading the lyrics on the Bird CD....isn't it the most awful font to try and read........I hate it.......I prefer to see all the loops and curves.......

Ah, I was aware of "go hok" meaning "lie" in standard Thai. I've never heard "kee hok", though. I suppose I should count myself lucky that I've never needed to know it before
I was aware that the three girls in the video were speaking different dialects in the "spoken" sections; I don't even want to try to figure out what they're saying as that will confuse me even more.

I have a real hard time decyphering the stylized Thai fonts. That one is particularly bad because it is so small. (E.g. for 10 minutes, I was confusing Haw Heep as Taw-Taharn; "Tua Jai", what the heck is that!)

The kii part...meaning...shit...waste.....but is not exceptionally rude in that sense...is the prefix for things that a done badly...wastefully
eg kii hok as we saw before.....
I'm sure most of us have heard kii mao...drunk....shit faced...pissed....etc!!
