Anybody remember http://www.thisbigworld.com? Dont click the link...

That was my old website. It was just a one page website, had hotmail login on one side, yahoo login on the other and a banner on the top. I had it as a homepage in cybercafes everywhere (Started it off in LOS, quickly spread via travellers writing down the URL to Laos, VietNam, Oz, Malaysia, USA, (and Belgium for some reason) etc etc.)
Got about 80k visits a day at its height.
Feel free to nick this idea if you want it, it works. I wasnt paying for bandwidth (had an associate who owned an ISP host it for nothing) he pulled the plug one day and I just let it go. Made me a littl bit of cash.
well, there ya go....

It wasnt about anything. No content, no info, nothing. Just login boxes. One half had hotmail logo (dark blue background - language buttons etc), the other the grey yahoomail page.
Cybercafes use hotmail as a homepage, some use yahoomail. I combined the two, put a banner on the top and got paid when people clicked it.....

Please excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge OBE but how did you get people to use your website, how did you create the website, how much did you get paid when people clicked it and who paid you the money?

I've seen a similar thing, possibly the same in several plkaces around Thailand - some have more than just Hotmail and Y! .... jeez logging into hotnmail is a pain in the arse!!

There may well be people doing it now, I dont know.
I hoped some of you guys had seen it, it was in a hell of a lot of cybercafes. Mostly where the travellers were.

I came up with the idea whilst working at an ISP in Spain. Flew home, set up a quick company with my brother and found a backer (a guy who owned an ISP in the UK). He had web-designers do the page for me.
Flew out to LOS and 'gave' the page to a few cybercafes around the Khao san RD area. Travellers liked it (cos it was quick), took it with them, other cybercafe owners saw travellers using it, set it up as a homepage on their machines and it just kinda spread.
How did it make money? There are loads of ad agencies /affiliate sites out there on the web. They pay you a couple of pence everytime somebody clicks on a banner or button they give you. (Actually, they just act as middlemen between companies that want to advertise and people who have high traffic websites).
The reason I was able to get a backer was becuase it was on the tail end of the good days for web advertising, the bubble burst about the time I started to get decent traffic and it dropped to a couple of pence per banner click, I made anywhere between 100 and 300 quid a month for about a year, until the guy hosting it pulled the plug (I hadnt given him any money at all).

jimaz, I wouldnt bother using the same domain, its been dead for a while now. You need to just create a site and go to LOS, introduce it to cafe owners and it will roll under its own steam.
Speed is everything though, I had a dedicated server in the early days, it was rapid. ten times quicker than the standard hotmail login, the cybercafe owners wont be interested unless the dowload speed is significantly better than the normal hotmail page.

you have to have a hell of a traffic to make money selling clicks. I have some traffic and I never make any money heheheh I am just a.com addict I collect domains. I have over 200 but I would not rec the click to get rich to any one.

Jesus I knew people were dumb but !!!!
I wont use net cafes for anything other than browsing (without passwords) I know how easy it is to install keyloggers either locally or remotely with a fresh non AVP logged trojan / backdoor...
