Is there any problem exchanging $500 Us travelers checks? I have brought $100 in TT before but would like to try the 500 version if available. How much is the fee to exchange if anyone knows? I think it would be a lot more convienient than cashing 100's all the time. Thanks

Why would there be a problem? A travellers check is a travellers check is a travellers check.

The only problem I foresee is trying to use a $500 one as cash in a shop or restaurant - perhaps they won't have enough cash to give you as change.

But in a bank or at a money exchange booth, no problem at all.

I think I can see why CaptK might be concerned. All vendors and sales clerks (including money changers) increase their scrutiny of the currency as the denomination increases. Afterall, they stand to lose a lot if one bad check is passed to them. If they can refuse a "1996" $100 bill, they could (in theory) refuse a $500 TC. I also would be curious to hear if anyone has experienced any problems changing the larger denomination TC.

does anybody know how much you lose on the exchange of travelers checks? Is it 30 baht per check? This is why I was considering the larger 500 checks as opposed to the 100. By the time you pay for your hotel, massages, a couple of nights out you are constanly running to the money changer to cash those 100 TT. Thanks

As the resident cheap Charley even I am not worried by the 30 baht fee. Downside to the $500 if you get ripped you lose $500 instead of $100.

I use ATM for most of my cash and carry TC for an emergency.

ck.

change 1 times usd 500 = thb 30 fee

change 5 times usd 100 = thb 150 fee

difference thb 120.

if thb 120 is a concern to you, better stay home.

if not, have fun in los.

peace

Each Traveler's Cheque (TC) incurrs a 33 baht fee (30 baht for this and 3 baht for that). So if you exchange five (5) one-hundred dollar TCs you would pay a total fee of 165 baht. If you exchanged one (1) five-hundred dollar TC, you would pay a fee of 33 baht. You do get a slightly better exchange rate for TCs. Generally speaking, it has been my experience that the break-even point is $500 USD. All things being equal, safety and security issues aside, below $500, it is better to cash $100 dollar bills. At $500 it's roughly equivalent. $1,000 TCs are a good way to transport money into Thailand, maybe a tad better than a wire transfer?

little off the topic but

I was thinking instead of bringing a few thousand in cash or TC, I could simply use the ATM. I like to do some shopping in bkk and there are times when I spend quite a bit. I don't want to use my credit card with some of those vendors or shops so I always use cash (baht).

So my question is "is there a limit to the amount you can withdraw from a ATM in bkk?"

I have a platinum ATM card that alllows me to withdraw 2 thousand US$ here in the states. Most of the ATMs here don't have a problem with this.

appreciate any info
thanks

I use TC's, cash, CC's, and my atm. I use all 3 just in case something unexpectedly happens, theft, broken atm card, lost CC's etc. The only problem I've ever had with my CC's is alot of places don't take american express, and the extra sir charge.

Never had a problem with limits lower than what I can withdraw in the states when using my atm.
